I want to use a nac 82 with a nap 140. Will there be any advantage to powering the 82 with a (spare) flatcap?
There should be. Not only does using a dedicated power supply unshared with the power amp help but the Flatcap is unique among all Naim power supplies in that it is stable (and supported) into two devices. So you can get another SNAIC and use the FC to power both the 82’s primary power and the power upgrade.
To be fair, I’ve never compared with the 140 but it should be better. If the FC is “spare” it should cost you nothing to try.
That’s what I thought. worth trying. Doesn’t the two outputs differ though? One 24v and t’other 22V?
If it’s a Flatcap 2, then yes.
Ah, no Olive fc.
So just had a look single output 24v and not a lot inside. Transformer, caps card and output.
Nuts. Only single output then. Still, it “should” be better. Give it a whirl.
Yes it was deceptively simple. It could have been in a NAPSC case if only there was enough back panel space for all the sockets. It’s basically a NAPSC with slightly higher voltage and the pre out bridges.
It works well with its 92/90 combo, so I’ll give it a try.
Should be no problem, only one output needed to run 282.
Thats true, they could have used a much smaller box, guess design criteria matching 92/90.3/CD3 slimline.
You still need the Napsc to get Nac 82 working.
Using the same casework as the rest of the 3 series was advantageous both from a performance perspective (performed much better using the full space to optimise placement of the Transformer in relation to the rest of the circuitry - out it all in a small box and it didn’t sound as good, so go figure), no need for different/specific casework at potentially greater cost, and it many everything would match aesthetically. Same for the Flatcap 2 family.
I guess my question was more about the performance of the fc with an 82 as it was designed for the 92.
It’s my understanding that the flatcap supply is of a similar standard as that in the 140. That said, there is no harm in trying. Maybe you would report back on your findings.
Flatcap on 82 was an upgrade from 180 internal PSU. Hicap DR better still.
Well that is a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect much from this. Bedroom with CB 62/140 playing in to Fyne baby floor standers F302. Source Node2i/Qutest.
I replaced the 62 and left the 82 running with the 140 overnight at low volume. Today listened for about an hour and then swapped in the flatcap. Immediate and obvious improvement, mostly in the bass control, but also separation. Impressed with this simple change.
That’s excellent. Wait until you find a second hand HCdr ![]()
Always the plan but they are thin on the ground at the moment.
Stacking it all on a sideboard is def not helping though.
Lol, temp to try it out.
Good to see some love here for the slimline boxes. The Flatcap XS is quite a versatile device, I was happy to find one new sealed in box just before Christmas.
Now to power the XS3, but possibly also a Headline when a find a later one. It could have powered my Prefix separately but that sounded better through the aux2 after comparing.
Good to learn it could also power the NAC82 and then likely also the NAC282 both inputs, maybe I’ll go there some day.
