Ive just bought the active modules for my Twenty5 22i’s and lovely they are, and in the first instance used my Hegel DAC as a balance preamp, however I want to try my NAC282 as the preamp, I suspect it’ll have a more organic feel and more gain, but lets see.
My question in how do I hook-up the 282? Do I just ignore the connection to the power amp?
You would connect the speakers from socket 3 of the hicap powering the 282.
Use the unbalanced inputs on the speaker amps.
Either take both left and right from socket 3, or left from socket 2 and right from socket 3.
You’ll need cables made up din to rca phono.
Worth noting that the 282 and HiCap are not designed to run long cables. If the length is longer than 3m, you will need to request one to made up slugged with a resister to protect the Naim gear.
Thank you for the tip off - I rang Naim who said length was not an issue so long as the cables were not twisted conductors, parallel and coax being fine in any practical length.
Just to report - sharing information - we are running 282 + HCDR → PMC active.
All connections as suggested above by @robert_h
As mentioned above and shown in the connections guide. That’s L + R from the HCDR.
The interconnect cables are : 5 Pin DIN - Linn Black - Linn RCA phono
We are using 5m cable length and it works just fine.
The cable was made up and supplied by our dealer and installed just yesterday.
With line level - unbalanced - out to speakers, my instinct is that 3m is safe. Maybe up to 5m or so, is okay. Our recent experience now suggest this is fine.
I’m not sure I would wish to go much further. (But I’m aware others have used longer cables in the same situations). The issue is always with picking up RF noise and this very much depends on local conditions and proximity to other things in the same space.
@feeling_zen mentions the work around solution others adopt for longer…
Active ATC users - with Naim OC systems - might have experiences to share and help here too.
