Folks,
After many, many years of LP12/Naim/Rega Ela I recently made a substantial upgrade to my speakers. The Naim part started off in the mid 80s as 42/100 and gradually over forty odd years to 32.5/110 (later added hicap) to 82/110 and in 2020 to 82/250.
With my new speakers (Neat Orkestras) I’d got the system sounding absolutely superb on some records down to decent on others with the the one bugbear being than on some albums I got too much bass. So in terms of how good records sounded, not a dissimilar spread of what sounded great to OK as with the Elas, but with them it was sometimes too much top end rather than too much bottom end.
So, I found a 52/Supercap offer that in the end I thought was too good to not try. Just about everyone I spoke to and everything I read about says the 52 is a big step up and sure enough it really is. I feel like I’m in the big league now!
So, what really puzzles me is that the little bit of excess bass/lower mid bloom that I could not get rid of on some albums on the 82 has completely gone with the 52. I would have expected the frequency response of them both - other than RIAA - to be flat (or as near as damnit). It’s not the NA523 cards, they’ve been swapped to check, it’s the another part of the 82.
So my question is: is this something to be expected with a step from the 82 to the 52? Or might there be an issue with the 82? My Neutrik test gear has sadly broken down otherwise I’d check the frequency response of the two side-by-side.
Thanks for your thoughts!
