Carrying on from my thread of last year about a purchase of a pair on Allaes, I have finally got around to getting them out of their boxes!
These are mainly for TV duties using a Superuniti to control and amplify.
This setup replaced a uniti with a pair of credos.
My first impressions are, it’s inferior when using the TV stream, marginal gain (if any) from blurays but definitely a difference when streaming music on Tidal.
So, I’m half thinking about putting the old set-up back as it’s 99% for TV and movies.
The Allaes are set perfectly vertical, 200mm from the rear (solid) wall and 2 metres apart facing perpendicular to the wall. See below.
They are in the precise location that the credos were in.
They sound a bit bright to my ears and not as bass rich as the credos.
I’m now wondering what all the fuss is about with Allaes
My assumption is that the suspension is working properly and that a smart rap of the the knuckles on the top of the front of the top boxes has them oscillating gently backwards and forwards.
As Chris advises, check the suspension. Any sideways movement at all will signify an issue. In particular, check that the rear spikes aren’t floating on or coupled to any carpet (cut slits help here) and are engaging the floor evenly and not one slightly before or after the other, as otherwise it can put a slight twist in the base and will adversely impact performance.
Chatting to a friend of mine earlier who has a pair of Allaes said it took him an entire evening messing around and tweaking.
His advice to me was to push them back to be 50mm from the rear wall and to slightly angle them back (adjusting the spikes) to around a 4-5 degree ‘tilt’. He also slightly toes them in too.
That seems contrary to the advice I have read on here, suggesting parallel to the rear wall and dead vertical.
Richard. I used a piece of plate glass off my mana table to set the M8 spikes dead level (with the base unit upside down. I then positioned the speaker and pressed down firmly to bed the spikes through the carpet and underlay onto the concrete below.
I then rechecked the top of the base units were level (they are perfectly) and the sides dead vertical (which they are).
The suspension appears to work okay with the oscillation being front to rear with a tap on the top.
So I have moved them back to 100mm from the rear wall with a centre to centre distance of 1.85 metres.
Listening to a bit of Tony Joe White they sound pretty darn good
They were stored unused for a year so might free up a bit as I use them (don’t know if that’ll help but let’s see)
Bit confused about my mate saying angle them 4-5 degrees back from the vertical??
I don’t know about Allaes but I’ve had used speakers sounding very poor after a period of time in storage. My current Shahinians, for example, purchased ex-demo, sounded poor at first and took about 10 days to show their true abilities.
