Naim and Dynaudio Thread

With that damage I agree with others. Hopefully the shipper insured that package and can file to have that taken care of for his sake. I bought speakers that arrived with similar damage and the sender had it taken care of via insurance through UPS. Your call but I know what I would do and did do.

Thanks for all the feedback.

A full refund and return of the speakers is already agreed. Then out of curiosity Iā€™d see if I could get the tweeters out - it was surprisingly easy and there are no creases/dimples. So I went back to to the seller to see what we could agree on.

If I can get 60% off what I paid, then Iā€™ve got a good deal and could resell later at the same price with full transparency to their history - these are basically a mid-term stop-gap til funds allow for something more in line with my kit. I tried Special 40s - they were lovely but need more space that I can give them so figured a similar but smaller design would work well. And then they arrived like this.

Playing Achtung Baby, which I know inside out, and they sound great. Hmm what to doā€¦

Donā€™t keep them! If the internal bracing is compromised that can result in a resonance or a buzzing that drives you nuts thinking there is an issue with the system somewhere else. Itā€™s not worth the grief.

Theyā€™re going back :frowning:

Thanks everyone for the input.

Just curious but what model?

Good decision Catcat. You canā€™t keep those.

Catcat, did you share a smoke with the Dyns after your intimate moment?

But on a more serious note, I had the same issue with a dented tweeter on a pair of preloved F260s that I purchased. I didnā€™t attempt to pop it out, as I was unsure how successful that would have been. Rather I negotiated a partial refund to cover the cost to replace the tweeter. Dynaudio insists that per their very close manufacturing tolerances, it is unnecessary to replace them in pairs. So I ordered a new single tweeter from Dynaudio and replaced it myself, as itā€™s not difficult to do.

If it was only the tweeter domes, and considering that thereā€™s no evidence of any faults to the dome(s?) after your repair job, I would have taken the half refund myself!

But then thereā€™s the cabinet damage. In my experience it takes very little to push in a corner. I doubt that the internal bracing was damaged. IMHO, youā€™d see significantly more external damage to make that likely.

So it comes down to the cosmetics. Personally, I find that pushed in corners are hard to overlook, so I agree with your decision.

By the way, I used a Tohnichi adjustable torque screwdriver to gently tighten up all the driver mounting screws (to 1,3 Nm per Dynaudio) as several were quite loose.

They were Focus 110s. I tried Special 40s over the Xmas period - loved them, but couldnā€™t offer the space they need so figured a similar-but-smaller design might work. There was no point even trying the Contour 20, I then blew most of the speaker budget on an Atom and SN2 - decisions Iā€™m overjoyed with - so the Focusā€™s were just going to be stopgap, but one that might have been relatively long-term if they sounded right enough.

That sucks. Iā€™d love to find a pair of Focus 110. Looked before I bought my x14. Found a pair of F140 but thought they would be too much for my needs.

you should definitely claim from the sender of those and let them claim the damages from the courier, repairing those will be difficult as you would need to recover the each side of veneer for it to be a decent job as patching it would b difficult to match. the speakers will still work fine though.
im looking for another pair of dyn contour 1.8, which are also difficult to find lately.

There was never any concern getting a full refund - that had already been agreed. But when I got the tweeters back out without any visible damage to them, then the question arose of whether continue with the sale but for half the price ā€¦ unlike me Iā€™ve taken a cautious approach and theyā€™re definitely going back now.

On putting back in the box last night, I noticed that one prong on each speaker grille had snapped off and was still in the corner hole of the speaker - so looks like they took a sideways blow in transit.

How are you getting on with your S40ā€™s? Iā€™m considering a pair in Birch grey also. Are they run in yet? Also, how do you find the Stand 6? my dealer tells me theyā€™re discontinued and is recommending the Stand 20 instead

I bought Special 40s together with a Nova last year. I have to say the Special 40s have proven to be a real bargain that have improved with age.
Iā€™m surprised that they are not double the price. The only speakers that Iā€™ve heard since that I would consider, for reasonable money, are the Kudos 505.

I listened to a pair yesterday of s40,s comparing the Melco N10 with its more expensive SSD brother. Front end was an ndx2, did not notice the ampā€¦but they did sound very good.

I am using Focus 160s onthe end of a 282/250.2 combination. I am curious about Special 40s, but some people say that the uplift from the Focus 160s is marginal. You have had both. Any thoughts?

Hi @Hollow - I am getting on very well with the S40s, thank you. They are pretty much fully run in, I guess, and I love them. As others have said, they represent fantastic value for money.

While the red is very striking and has the ā€˜wowā€™ factor I think one could tire of it so Iā€™m very happy with the grey birch. Either way, the quality of finish is superb.

Yes, I believe the Stand 6 is now discontinued. I was originally going to buy the 25, but my dealer let me have the 6s I used for audition at a very good price. I chose the 6 for aesthetic (and price) reasons, and although I believe the 25s offer a bit more stability, thereā€™s apparently not much difference between the two.

Yep, grey birch yesterdayā€¦looked the part. Ironically it was another persons demo who had traffic delay problems, so i warmed them up for him.

Iā€™ve got special 40s on stand 20s (pic at the top of this thread). I see from a lot of your posts that you like electronic music - well so do I and the special 40s are well suited for this type of music (as well as others) because of the full bass, that they can handle dynamics well and they have a smooth and refined treble (which can offset some harder electronic music sounds). The stand 20s are not cheap (I got Ā£100 off of mine but they were still Ā£375 with the discount), but they are very well made and very stable. I put Atacama atabites in them as per a post I made further up the thread, and they are not moving at all. One thing I especially like about the stand 20s is that you can adjust the spikes from the top of the base, making it much easier to get the stands level, and itā€™s easy to move the stands about. I took the pic at the top of this thread before I screwed the spikes down, so the spikes are sticking up a lot from the top of the base. The stands have non-slip pads on the tops to mate to the speakers, and I have also put blu tack to make sure they donā€™t fall off. Dynaudio supply screws to screw the speakers to the stands but I cannot bring myself to put screw holes in the bottom of the speakers!

Cheers for that, yeh I feel a pair coming on! Not sure about the stand 20ā€™s though, Iā€™m sure theyā€™re excellent stands but I find the base a bit unsightly, Iā€™m not a fan of stands in general so would prefer something more visually subtle

@Hollow although theyā€™re discontinued, apparently Stand 6s, which to my eye are the most pleasing aesthetically, are still fairly easy to get hold of - ask your dealer or contact Dynaudio directly - they have excellent customer service.
