Naim CD3.5 not reading CD's

Hello
I have a Naim CD3.5 that has gradually had more and more difficulty in reading CDs. I thought it was the puck and ordered a new one, but that hasnt helped the situation.

Sometimes it will read a CD if i repeatedly hit play button rapidly. If it isnt the puck not gripping the CD well enough, can anyone tell me what else it might be that preventing it playing?

Kind regards
Andrew

Are you getting the “Err” display?

It is possibly a dickie laser. Naim may have a few left, they changed mine last year. However the complete mechanism is probably unobtainable.

There are several threads on this topic, search for “CD3.5 Repair” and “Cd 3.5”

Also an email to support@naimaudio.com could be beneficial.

Hello
Thank you for the swift response.

Yes it is coming up with Err display.

Andrew

You could try gently cleaning the laser mech’s lens with a cotton bud and a small amount of isopropyl.

I have a CD5 that is 20+ years old. It can be temperamental at times, and it has more trouble with certain CDs than others. Getting a new puck might help in my case, but not completely. If we go away for a long period I do switch the system off inc the CD5 and every time I switch it on it plays up for a few days after but on occasion it will refuse to play a CD. I expect there will be a day when I switch it back on and it does not get better after a while.

Sometimes for me opening the door and moving the CD on the table and then shutting the door again helps to get it to read the CD or I just swear at it.

Is it all Cds or just some? In the past when I had a CD3 it didn’t like certain CDs which could be fixed with a thin ring of paper under the CD.

Naim can fix certain things but spares are hard to come by.

Hello Robin
I’ll try the cleaning idea, thank you.
I too, have that found over recent years that some cd’s were more sensitive to it than others. But now it seems pretty well all are a problem to it. I dont recall trying the swearing approach, but maybe I should…
Thanks again

Its gradually become most if not all cd’s. I suppose as it about 25 years old, one could argue that it doesn’t owe me much, but it still has a lovely sound when it chooses to play.
I might try the paper idea…hadnt thought of that!
Thank you for your thoughts
Kind regards
Andrew

When our 3.5 was “dying” last year, I also tried the paper ring idea (albeit with a layer of sellotape on the upper surface) on those CDs which were giving trouble (the “thinner” CDs referred to in one of the threads I suggested).

It worked for a while, but eventually the “disease” spread to all CDs, and a new laser was needed.

Have you emailed the service dept yet?

Hello
I’ll try the cellotape trick as well maybe. And yes I’ve emailed them and got an automated reply, suggesting they’ll follow up shortly.
Thanks again
Andrew

Ask your Naim dealer to have a look at it and advise you.

Quicker to go straight to the service dept, and ask whether they still have any lasers left for this model.

Also worth noting it may not even be the laser.

My CDS2 stopped working earlier in the year. I assumed it was terminal but Naim brought it back to life.

Maybe lubricate the rails and the gears… I ordered a laser from Aliexpress and tried it out, it runs perfectly and there’s no difference in sound
