Naim cd5

I recently picked up a Naim CD5 that is faulty, the lights don’t turn on, and when you power it on the laser “vibrates” as if it’s trying to move further away from center even though it’s already as far from centre as it can go.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Sounds like something @NeilS might be able got advise on. Whatever, it does sound like it needs some repair at Naim, although if the mech is shot I’m not sure whether that can be replaced any more.

Plug missing on the back and transport screw in…? Poor guess, but it’s what comes to mind.

Transport screw is missing. Here is a photo of the back, I assume that’s the plug your referring to?

I’m not Max but it is.

(CD5 has two transit screws if I remember correctly, with knurled plastic heads, on the underside.)

Yes, correct Chris, one to secure the loading door and mech and one to brace the compliant PCB.

What usually happens is, the rectifying diodes fail short circuit & blows the case fuse. Owner then replaces the fuse & switches on, shorted diodes then blow open circuit leaving it in this state.
There may well be further damage to some low value resistors in the power supply stages.

Neil.

Thanks Neil, would there be visible damage to the board if this was the case?

Yes, the diodes next to the transformer secondary wires will be blown apart. There are (were) four of them. Sometimes the outer black body with a silver stripe at one end will be completely missing, leaving the internals looking a bit like the Terminator’s arm when he rips the living part off!
Apologies if you are unfamiliar with the film.

Neil.
