So I have a Naim CDX2 that won’t read certain discs.Adtually mostly the higher tracks on some discs. Was told it was cause I was using the wrong puck for it.Got a new clamp 4 from Naim -same result.Pulled up an old forum thread that said these problem discs were made to thin at the hub and two solutions was to try Blu tack under the clamp beside the magnet and add masking tape at the disc’s label side-just at edge of the disc.Tried both -no luck ! Do Rega players have this problem as well or is it’s just Naim ones?
We had this problem with Sue’s CD3.5. Again it was only a few discs that exhibited the problem. Those discs were helped by putting a few bits of of sellotape around the central hole (on the upper face of the disc, obviously), to thicken up that area (I had read the same old thread, or something similar).
It did help for a time, but eventually the 3.5 took a holiday to Salisbury for a new laser, and it has been absolutely fine ever since. And the sellotape has been removed from those few CDs!
However, I think the CDX2 may have a different mech to our CD3.5 & CDX…… @Richard.Dane will be able to advise.
The CDX2 used the VAM1250 (quite similar to the VAM1205 of your CD3.5) and then was re-engineered to use the VAM1202.
The problem you are experiencing can be down to a few things. You’ve checked the clamp and replaced, but it seems it may not be that. You could try a clamp 5 to be sure. Otherwise Get your dealer to take a look. Hopefully it’s just the laser sled ribbon cable getting stuck in something rather than the mech dying.
Thanks Richard for your reply! Actually the person who sold to me has a Naim CDX2.2 he is selling cause he bought a CD3.I know the 2.2 used the VAM1202 where the X2 used the 1250.Thing is he replaced the laser in mine with an OEM perhaps two years ago -so while the 2.2 might be the newer player the laser might be older.Great guy that he is has offered to have me trade back the 2 for his 2.2.I really like that idea for a couple of reasons. If I was to have trouble with the DAC portion of the 2.2 I could always use it as a transport to my Universal player’s DAC (an Oppo -UDP-205).Would like to know I know the Naim has the BNC type digital output -does anyone make a BNC-Coax interconnect ?
Naim can supply a BNC to RCA coaxial DC1 cable, and I know others offer them too, although they may have to be to special order.
Just talked to the guy who sold it to me.He confirmed he replaced the laser mechanism one year ago with an OEM Naim VAM 1250.The fact that is does play some CDs without issue but others the first few tracks only might be due to the laser NOT moving as it should. So I will send it back to him for him to check it out.He also has another new OEM VAM 1250 laser I case the laser he replaced it with did go bad .Fingers crossed here!
I’m slightly suspicious of these claims as Naim never supply spares. They only make them available to their in-house service department and authorised repair agents. Maybe ask the seller from where exactly they are sourcing these “OEM” parts?
VAM1250s have been unavailable for many years and there is a lot of rubbish out there claiming to be NOS etc…
He purchased them a few years ago when there were a few left.He described to me what to look for-he’s not bs-ing
If it says “New Old Stock” or “New (other)” - run away!
