Our ears really plays strange tricks, both us preferred the last Hicap even if It’ s a notch more forward with a touch more of sibilants, on the other hand the base line is more articulated, Max B is besides me now, he’ll probably add something more later, we also compared the 62 swapping later with a 72
@rsch The serviced one or non-serviced? Which one with the hardened feet?
The last one with hard feet sold as already serviced
Swap the feet over. See, or hear if there’s any change.
Max also carried along a really nice Ottorino Respighi edition of The Fontane/I Pini Di Roma either on CD and vinyl, the latter was a very old record 50+ yo and pretty battered as well. Surprisingly played with Rega P3 with a 15 yo Exact into 202/HC/200/S400 was nearly silent overall, with Sondek and new Adikt into 62/HC/250 we noticed much more vinyl clicks and scratchs.
IME serviced late chrome bumpers honestly telling you problems of the source. You could use the set to do troubleshooting of the source setup.
And I went through similar issues before. My LP12 used to have the white liner (black housing) pre-cirkus bearing with Mobil Velocite 6 oil, along with an old Ittok arm it’s noisy even after refill of oil.
Since I switched to black liner+black oil noise floor is much lower, clicks and pops are much suppressed due to better bearing and oil. If you are already using later bearing you may want to see if your bearing needs a refill of oil.
You may also want to see if your armboard is period correct as well:
white-liner: 1 side laminated;
black-liner: 2 sides laminated, no mid-layers; cirkus: 2 sides laminated, 1-2 mid-layers;
The more mid-layers the more revealing the sound, and less involving imo. If using white-liner bearing+late armboard it will sound bright and show all the noises as well.
Mine Is 1yo with karousel bearing and more subchassis
Hey CB clan,
When talking active it’s either 135s or 250s has anyone ever tried with other amps, 160/140/110
Thanks
I don’t know the answer but it has got me thinking. I have two spare 140’s. If I use the hicap outputs I could presumably feed these two 140’s in a passive bi amping configuration. One 140 for the L/R low frequencies, and the other 140 for the L/R high frequencies. Would this give a better SQ than a single 140, or would the mids disappear or become ‘muddy’ ?
I’m thinking naxo 2-4 into 160s
My thinking was really just speculative. I only have one speaker set with two binding posts. Those speakers are on barn duty at the mo, they are that good!
I have, a while ago used 2 off 140s from a olive HC. Cant say i heatd a big difference. Each HC fed its own speaker ( L or R), rather than feeding low or high units.
I used a pair of 110s with an early pair of active Kans (modified by Linn). Pre-amp was a 32-5 with CB HICAP. Crossover was an olive NAXO with olive HICAP. Similar to @Thegreatroberto one amp drove each speaker.
It was the cleanest, most neutral sound I’ve heard from Kans but I felt all those shoeboxes (x6) and cables got in the way of the music and it wasn’t as involving and coherent as a single passive 110. That was the end of my active Naim exploration.
More modern Linn amps do analogue active quite differently and I feel the active vs passive choice is quite a bit closer, but again I still ended up going back to passive for musicality reasons.
It’s possible but the main thing is not to use SNAIC4s between the NAXO or SNAXO - instead use active leads which are the same cable used with the bigger amps except with DINs at both ends.
Do you think people will still be asking about CB amps in 20 years time? There won’t be many people left who were buying Hi-Fi in the 80s, or will that not matter? If folks are still into them, then it certainly won’t be spurred on by nostalgia. Must admit that Hi-Fi produced before I was born is not of much interest to me.
Launched in 57 I believe & remains the best speaker I’ve heard and still talked about? My 250CB is a bairn by comparison. CBs will surely be a thing for years to come. One box thingy’s might struggle for long term credibility though. Character matters!
Hey, I bought my CB Naim in 1982 and I plan to be around in 20 years, thank you very much
Fair play!
As a young fella, I also bought my 32 / 250 in 1982 and they’re still playing nicely, with the 32 upgraded internally to a 32.5 with 72 cards. HC (1984) and 250 recapped multiple times.
So I hope to also be here in 20 years.
I would also expect in 20 years time, interest in seeking that “vintage Nait 50 CB from 2024” will be present.
