The MM loading of Nait 50 is 100pF for modern carts, which compare to 322/Nait 1’s traditionL 470pF. That explains why Rega Exact with 100pF sounds great with Nait 50 phono and Adikt doesn’t.
Even with Nait50 here, the Rega is more dynamic than Sondek/Adikt
That’s blown my N50 theory then
Well my Linn K9 sounds great with the Nait 50. No idea what the loading is, not an issue.
Ok so just checked the loading for K9 and it’s recommended 100-200pf, so i guess that’s why it sounds fine.
Yes I don’t know why but AT’s MM carts seem working fine with wide range of loading.
You probably find Adikt works great with Linn MM phono amps (obviously) and Naim’s as they all have high loading. Maybe sound not right with Nait 50.
@rsch Yes exactly what I said. Rega Exact’s 100pF loading matches with Nait 50, lovely earthy tone. Using with 322/Nait 1 probably too bright, at least doesn’t sound as intended.
thanks for the tips. I can confirm that my RP6/EXACT MM sounds beautiful with my NAIT50
Hi all, I have been offered a 12N and a BD160 (officially serviced) at reasonable price. I’m tempted as it’s highly regarded combo.
With Linn Kan MK1, what would I gain and lose, if switching from 32.5/HC/CB250 to 12/160?
I know the best way is hear by myself but it’s hard to do for now. If it doesn’t worth the move I don’t bother to kick up a dust.
Any opinions from you all are greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Having had several of those combinations I would say, keep the 32.5/HC/CB 250. Linn Kan need a Nap 250 to really sing( they were designed with Nap 250)but active with two Nap 160 is certainly better.
Yes I concur!
Gonna by no surprise to you that I much prefer the 12/160 to 32-5/HC/250. I tried a few 32-5’s, three HCs, and a CB and olive 250. I actually preferred the Snaps.
The older amps are quite a lot more coherent to my ears and closest I found to a Nait in that regard. The downsides will be less clarity and bass weight which is never ideal with Kans.
They are hard to find now so I’d urge you to give them a go whilst the opportunity is there.
Thank you Igel, yes it sounds to me anything less than a 250 wouldn’t sound right with the Kan, great reminder thank you.
@Murmur Yes I’m very tempted to get the combo, great collectible!
what’s the better speakers with 12/160 other than Kan? I wonder what speakers the 12/160 voiced for given Kan wasn’t release then.
Yes I bought a Snaps as well, very curious as everyone said it sounds ‘more analogue’
Just for curiousity, how many amps have you? It seems you own an impressive collection and knowlege as well
briks!
…with an MC cart
And forty years on we are with systems we owned in 1984
Me too…
Well from slightly later (1988) NAC 62s, NAP 140 and HICAP…
Speakers from 1974…51 years ago…
All in daily use…
And in the same house from 1979…
and with the same wife from 1979…
Now that really is an achievement. ( Not saying which)
Thanks a lot for all the comments, especially help from @Igel and @murmur, so this noon I bought the BD160. I was very happy with the demonstration – it wasn’t a pure Linn/Naim setup, but Garrard 301, with Ear phonobox and Chartwell 3/5a. The former owner is on the verge moving onto valve amplifier and so it is.
Powering a 32.5 and driving Linn Kan the BD160 sounds very smooth, musical, definitely foot tapping, and it sounds unexplainably more romantic, we don’t feel like to turn down the volume knob anyway. As Igel said it sounds less full and bass not as deep as 250, but if into the music we don’t feel like missing those HiFi quality.
The phono boards, compare to having HiCap sounds lack of power, I will pull out another phono board later for more power.
I will play around for 2 weeks and see how I like it.
One bad thing is when home I was too tired and wrongly put it on a bench…and it fell on the floor. The light bulb gone, the plastic collars of binding posts all broken…sound is fine. Luckily the bolt down were built like tank.
