Naim DAC V1 and Nap 250-2 Combo - anyone tried it?

Hi

Anyone tried this particular combination?

Having tried several DAC’s, I really like the smooth but engaging musical sound of the V1 - much preferred it to a Chord Qutest and various others. I am currently using an old Linn Klout power amp with the V1 as a DAC preamp which sounds great but an opportunity has arisen for a local purchase of a Nap250-2 so thinking of trying it !

Speakers are a lovely pair of LS3/5a’s

Many thanks

I have a dac v1 and a n-dac connected to my 72/hc/250 olive.

I did feed the dac v1 direct to the 250, using the dac v1 as the volume control.
Lets just say i didnt like it. Yes, it was a simple set up, but the 72/hc brought much more clarity and weight to the sound.

Many thanks for the reply, interesting.

I kind of had the opposite experience, removed the Linn preamp out of the system and the sound improved !

Will be getting the 250-2 at some point soon after its service so will be able to try it for myself. If it doesn’t sound right can always add a pre/ps to the system

Give it a go, it may be ok for you. I only tried because i could. I just preferred what the 72/hc brought.

The V1 is another unloved naim item. No idea why, as i quite like mine. You can set up a simple system with it, including a headphone amp.

I have an Olive 250 which was used with an Olive HC and 82. I tried using my DAC v1 instead of the 82/HC and was not as good sounding to me. Reminded me of the difference adding the HC to a 72 had made - but in reverse. Just loses control and feels less open.
The Dac v1 was meant to be used in this way with the NAP 100, so might just be the 250 is too revealing and not such a good match.

Old photo of our DAC-V1 with NAP140 and wall mounted PMC DB1i speakers.

12 years sterling service and I still enjoy it immensely almost every day.

Best regards, BF

My desk is a bit more cluttered along with a pile of computing stuff and radio amateur gear is my Dac V1, 72/HC/140 and I love it every day. The V1 is a great piece of gear.

I think the DAC V1 is undervalued here because it’s too simple - wot you don’t need power supplies ? :sunglasses:

I’ve compared it to DAC’s from Chord, Denafrips, Topping, Rega and others (I know :person_facepalming:) and found it to be more musically engaging.

Will try the 250 and have some fun - will report back
