Naim DBL setup problem

Hi guys,

I have a problem with my DBL speakers setup. The bass driver cabinets are not sitting properly. I’m following the setup guide precisely but the panel which houses the spikes (facing upwards) isn’t perfectly level inside the L frame cabinet therefore when I place the bass driver cabinets on the L frame, the right speaker is sitting uneven and protruding from one side. On the left speaker, it is sitting level but rocks when you apply pressure at two ends.

I don’t think the panel that sits on the L frame cabinet is adjustable so I have no idea how to fix this problem. I’ve attached photos of the right speaker that isn’t sitting straight.

before anybody suggests, I’ve checked and I can confirm that the spikes are sitting in the hole. Can anybody offer any advice please

Just a thought, have you tried swapping cabinets over and see how they sit?

Have you confirmed that the bottom cabinet is completely level? With my SL2’s if the base isn’t completely level the upper levels (including the tweeter) won’t align correcltly.

I agree,try swapping them :+1:

The veneers won’t match up. Speaker A which in my room is the left speaker has a yellow sticker on all the cabinets so not to confuse the cabinets.

The L cabinets are level. I’ve double checked with ball bearing as sometimes spirit levellers can be inaccurate.

Are the spikes adjustable?

On my sbls I found that the spikes where screwed in,

The spikes facing upwards are not adjustable. They are welded onto the panel.

Do all the spikes look the same? maybe top of a spike might have been rounded off or squashed? do you have a long spirit level, rest level on the spikes, or if possible measure height of spikes? If it’s all level then the problem may be under the cabinet where the spike sits, just going by logical thinking,

maybe the franken dibble guy can help,

I’ll remove the bass driver cabinet and take a photo. To put it simply the spiked metal plate isn’t level. When you look at the cabinet eye level it’s lower from the left and higher on the right. Other than 2 allen bolts which attach the plate to the cabinet there is no other adjustment bolt. Even when the cabinet is level the plate isn’t.

Had a trawl through my Google photos. Found this.

Clearly there’s no adjustment of the spikes relative to the plate, they’re welded.

The plate itself appears to be flat on surface of the cabinet. I can’t see any scope for adjustment/leveling. Can’t recall if there’s any supporting structure within the cabinet or if it’s simply the cabinet itself supporting the weight of the bass box.

Peter (@Cymbiosis ) has a lot of experience with DBLs and might be able to shed some light on what’s going on.

So on my right speaker the plate is sitting a a millimetre lower on the left and sitting about 2 millimetres above the the rim of the cabinet on the right. As you have said I don’t see any adjustability unlike the mid tweeter cabinet for which the spikes can be adjusted.

The left speaker is sitting level but it rocks when you apply pressure at two ends.

@garyi should have an idea, as he rebuilt DBL, NBL, and SBL. KBL next probably :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Maybe one or two of the aluminium pads are too deeply perforated causing one part of the cabinet to sink too much. If so, new pads stapled on to the bass box would work.

I would suggest you replace the aluminium pads. On amazon search for ‘PATIKIL 2x1 Inch Anodized Aluminum Sheet Metal’. Very useful aluminum pads with sticky back which is what I use. To be fair my DBLs are going to be way further out than yours. One bass box I have two aluminium pads in one corner to take up the rocking.

Yes I concur with this Mario, given other comments here as the correct cabinets are together as Khan84 has said swapping the bass cabs means the veneers won’t match up.

Thank you for your advice. I’m pretty sure that the difference is larger than the new plates would correct so I will have to double plate on one side on the right speaker

Thanks for your help guys. I’ve managed to get the bass driver cabinet to sit right. I used the 1mm aluminium plates that @garyi suggested. Thank you :folded_hands:

i installed extra 1mm aluminium pieces on the right speaker (left hand side front and back)

i stuck them to the existing plates to make up the height difference using power grip tape

as 1mm plates were too thick to compensate for the front back rocking on left speaker, I used 1mm thick silicone cut off to balance it.

both cabinets are now sitting perfectly with no movement whatsoever. Very rigid.
