Naim NDS - still a good used buy?

Very nicely explained indeed, if you are going to debate lumin vs naim streamers etc it will be all other debate, then go for alo streamer which offers the best value

Somehow I expect that if I were to express my thoughts on some of the completely irrational logic expressed in the course of this thread, I’d probably be banned.

This is something we don’t know, so I am asking in good faith

Is the streamer section of NDS is an old computer? Is it now outdated vs bluenod etc? Yes…

Is the quality of streamer - its effect to the sound - is only about the new tech?

Let’s say you are Tidal user and have a world class dac without streaming, a Dave

Which will be a better SQ? NDS as a transport or a bluenode or any other sub 1k streaming transport?

Tidal 16/44 or local cd rips only

I think the language is a bit to complicated. Actually it is very simple.

Something that can provide a digital data (Digital Transport) → dac → amp → speakers

The only part you interact with is the Digital Transport. It can be a pc or dedicated unit. You want this to be modern as possible. To support contemporary streaming services and remote control capabilities (iPhone/iPad). Bits are bits, so you can use any decent player (just keep in mimd jitter can be an issue).
The bluesound is great, supports many services, gets updated frequently and it has a coax and optical output.

Then why bother with node, just plug a pc….

Or Hiby r3 android player… 200$ or something

It got all even roon… remote trough hiby app

You can use it with headphones as well

While you are there connet hiby r3 directly to amp trough 3.5mm to rca, skip the dac as well

R3 is a very nice sounding modern dac as well

Why pay 1.5k£ + 1k£ streamer/dac?

Excessive, no? Everyone can have an opinion, everyone can take a different view and express it. It seemed quite reasonable to me tbh. Definitely not worthy of even considering a ban…

You obviously don‘t get ot, and its not worth my time to try and explain it. You are free to do what ever you want, so do it.

Thank you, very kind of you

This thread made me think I was the biggest idiot in the world for the simple fact that i was stupid enough to go and buy a 13 year old Audi, instead of getting me a brand new Dacia (no disrespect intended).

NDS is a great product and will remain great, no matter the number of Dacias released in the next at least a decade. It is most definitely a good buy, so is the Dacia, but in a decade the same Dacia will be long forgotten.

It is very simple 4 wheels and engine!

You don’t get it don’t you!!

A better comparison would be the NDS as an old Volvo diesel, and a new modern streamer being a Tesla.

There is nothing more speedy or luxurious about the NDS than a modern DAC/streamer, it’s just a reliable old machine. It won’t get updated anymore, and you have to hope that it doesn’t break down, since repairs will be expensive.

That’s not true Litemotiv, since a Tesla is a pretty expensive thing. I’d say the old Volvo compared to the modern Renault Twizy:

Volvo 850 station was €50K new though!

Same price as a Tesla today. :innocent:

Actually, I have bought a new old stock Lenovo x220 last year since my original one finally broke. Best PC, better than most PCs in the market since it has a decent keyboard which boosts the working experience.

Here she is:

I have an unsaturated love for Saab. If life gets less complex (=kids leaving house) I’d get one.

X220 is a cool little machine yes! :+1:

I really miss the days of the 3:4 screen IBM Thinkpads though…

But a lot less now…

… and that is an 850R. You could pass anything. Except a filling station.

Yes hence the comparison with the 2K costing NDS, at about one-eight of the original price.

Similar to a 20 year old Volvo that you can buy now for 4-5K.

But your analogy isn’t complete until you suggest a new car that you consider would be better for the same price as the old car

That, of course, is the point. How would you define ‘better’?
