Naim NDX 2 Noise problem

Good afternoon,

When listening to music, I hear a noise (videos linked below). I connect the device to active speakers Dynaudio Xeo 20 using an RCA cable. I have tried playing music from a hard drive, radio, and Bluetooth, but the issue remains. I also changed the cable, but that didn’t help.

I bought the unit second-hand for 2000 euros, and when I discovered this problem, the seller just apologized, claimed he didn’t know about it, and then stopped responding.

Could you tell me how serious the issue might be and how much it could cost to repair? I need to determine whether it’s worth fixing or if it would be better to sell it for parts.

Thanks in advance!

That doesn’t sound good at all. In the first instance, if you aren’t happy then I would try to return it and get a refund from the seller. If you bought online through a site such as eBay then you will have protection. If you paid the seller via Paypal, you may still have some form of protection, so do check out your options here.

As for what’s wrong, I don’t know, probably something @NeilS may be able to advise on.

If it’s an issue with the NDX2 then Naim would probably be able to repair it but you should contact a Naim dealer to discuss options and likely costs.

That sounds like motor boating to me. Unfortunately I can’t give you any suggestions about how to resolve the issue. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will post suggestions on how to resolve the problem.

Have you tried connecting it to a normal amplifier using short interconnects? Just wondering whether it’s some kind of instability in trying to run into the speakers without a pre-amp in between. Just a thought.

Try connecting the NDX2 to a different system, if poss. If it exhibits same problem then you know it’s the NDX2. If not, then it will be that the speaker doesn’t get on with the NDX2. I have a suspicion that this may be something to do with using SE outputs in to a double insulated device (i.e. no earth)

I bought it in Spain. It was sent to me through the postal office, and I was able to verify that the unit was inside the box, but once you pick it up from the post office, there is nothing you can do. Of course, it’s impossible to check if it’s working properly at the post office.

Thank you for your response.

I don’t have any other equipment to test it with. Do you think this could be the problem? The last thing I wanted was to ask for opinions from people on this forum—maybe someone has had a similar issue. If I don’t find a solution here, I will have to send it in for service.

Unfortunately, I don’t have another system to test it with. I will probably have to send it in for service. Do you happen to know how expensive the repair might be?

I’m really worried that the person who sold it to me had already checked the repair costs, and it might have been more expensive than a new unit—that’s why he decided to do this to me.

Agree. That could also be coming from the amplifier. Do any other (line) sources have the problem?

It does sound like it’s oscillating, possibly because of longer single ended cables?
I would certainly try it in another system before sending it for repair.

Neil.

I used to own Dynaudio XD 600’s, so am a bit familiar with active Dyn’s. Are the speakers new to you? Have you had them working previously with another source?
Have you tried a digital connection instead of analog out of the NDX2?
Trying to narrow down if it is the NDX or the speakers themselves that have a problem.

Hello, Neil. I connected my Naim to the TV, and the same noise is present—it appears even when no music is playing. Is there a way to check if my unit is still under warranty using the serial number? Maybe things aren’t as bad as they seem. Thank you for trying to help me, I really appreciate it.

Yes, but I had previously connected my speakers to a turntable, and there were no issues. I wanted to connect via a digital connection, but as I understand, the NDX 2 only has a coaxial output, while the Xeo 20 only has Toslink and RCA inputs.

Thank you for trying to help me, I really appreciate it!

If you want to try a digital connection you could use a coax to optical converter.
Still, best to diagnose the problem if you can even of the digital output is unaffected.

Yes, contact our tech support team at Naim HQ.

Regards
Neil.

I did look up your speakers and saw the optical input only. How about running an optical cable from your TV into the speaker, does that work with no issues?

I recall buying a used CD player from a dealer 30 years back. It had a three-month warranty, but the player broke down in six. Shh!t happens, you are not alone.

I ordered the converter, and it should arrive tomorrow. I’ll test it then.

Thank you, I sent the message and will wait for a response.

If I understood you correctly, this is to check the speakers? The speakers worked fine with the turntable.
