Naim ns01 disk most likely not working after a power cut anything to try

I sold my old ns01 to one of my friends a while back.

The server has worked until an unfortunate power out happened a few weeks ago.

The unit is powered on but is not available on the network either for the desktop client or app.

ripping does not work, so my guess is that the disk failed as a consequence of the unplanned loss of power.

Power down and restart of the server, then the router and the server did not make it work again.

We can connect a screen and keyboard to the box, but is there any way to possibly get the disk back and running with the tools available in the xp version running oon the old servers?

It is my understanding that if the boot is ok we would see something like an old dos prompt unless the boot itself fails?

If the disk has failed it is almost certainly not repairable.

If it’s not visible using any of the usual interfaces, can you see if it has been allocated an IP address?

@ChrisSU

I don’t know if I am talking about the correct thing and if not, I apologize in advance. There are companies who can get data off of a failed disk and then try to repair a disk however their services are insanely expensive and usually reserved for business mission critical stuff. I don’t know if this helps the OP or not.

I believe you are correct, I’ve never had to do it myself but I believe data from a dead hard drive can often be recovered. The problem here would be more that it’s unlikely to be possible to find a compatible drive to fit as a replacement, and even then it may not be possible to reinstall the OS which runs on the same drive on these older servers.

Hopefully the actual music files would be backed up, and therefore more easily recoverable if the hardware is beyond repair.

@ChrisSU I live in NYC and it being a tech center, there are firms than probably can address the issues you raise regarding repair. Assuming they could and have access to what is needed, the question then becomes cost. Hopefully they (OP or friends) have a backup if they cannot find a firm.

We need to be a bit careful here when discussing ‘unauthorised’ repairs on Naim’s official forum, although hopefully @Richard.Dane might grant us a bit of leeway when it comes to supporting devices that Naim can no longer repair.

I’m not sure where this NS01 now lives, but a technician attempting a fix would need to extract the disc image for the OS and install it, which may not be entirely straightforward. All a bit speculative given that the fault is as yet undiagnosed.

I was careful not to mention specific businesses—Only that they exist.

I believe that only Naim can recover the disk correctly. Perhaps @NeilS can confirm, or otherwise.

Do I interpret correctly that you have connected a VGA monitor but it displays nothing? Does the monitor come out of standby when the unit is switched on?

Neil.

I did not try not knowing the router and that would be the fastest way to see what devices are active on the network.

I did try to rip a disk, but nothing happened so I really doubt the unit is doing anything than the basic power up before the disk that most likely does not work.

Hi,

No I did not bring my very old vga screen with me that day since we also need some working eyes for that to work, and a keyboard with the old connection. But the question is is it even worth it to try this?

Claus

Yes, definitely - the most likely cause of no boot after a power failure is an exhausted CMOS battery.

It will display a checksum error in the POST on the VGA output if so.

You can use a USB keyboard I believe. There’s quite a bit of advice posted previously about how to restore the Naim defaults after battery replacement.

Neil.
