I am in the process of going onto a separates system to replace my nova. I have a nac 282 and was wondering what to partner it with. I intend to purchase a ndx2 but do I get a supercap dr or Nap 250 dr.
An NAC282 needs a power supply. to run.
So… you either need a PS for it (such as a Hicap or a Supercap) - or you need a NAP with a PS built in (such as a NAP200).
An NAC282 and a NAP250 (only) will not work. At All.

A Supercap is ideal but not necessary. The smaller Hicap will power your 282 very well.
Some power amps can power a pre-amp, but they are not ideal, and the better power amps (including a 250) won’t. With no Hicap or Supercap, a 200 power amp is as far up the power amp list as you can go. That is quite important because a 250 is considerably better than a 200.
If getting a second-hand Hicap DR and a second-hand 250DR is a step too far, the older ‘olive’ boxes work very well indeed as long as they were serviced at some time in the last c.12 years.
As a streamer, NDX2 is very good - it’s what I am listening to now. ND5XS2 is a bit less good (unless you add the separate nDAC) and doesn’t have the pretty screen but is still noticeably better than a Nova (which is itself pretty good) imho.
NDX2 +282 +HICAP DR + 250 DR is a great system. If you want even more grip and detail, I still wouldn’t get a Supercap DR to replace Hicap. Instead, I’d add a XPSDR (power supply) to the NDX2 - it does make a difference.
eBay is your friend chasing any of these boxes. Also, while many of us talk about cable options, the cables that come with these boxes will do the job very nicely.

FWIW - A NDX 2 > HiCapDR > NAC 282 > NAP 250 is a fabulous system. You will get a lovely uplift with a SuperCapDR as well if you head that way. A XPS DR is also a lovely upgrade to the NDX 2.
This is based on my experience and my current system is XPS DR > NDX 2 > Hi-Line > SuperCap DR > NAC 282 > NAP 250 DR > NAC A5 > ProAc D30RS (full description in profile).

No, you need a Hicap or Supercap too with a 250 power amp.
