NAIT 5 with ND5 XS

Hello everyone!
This may be a stupid question, but can the ND5 XS streamer be used with a NAIT 5? And a FLATCAP 2? I’d say no, or at least it’s not relevant if you want to benefit from all the ND5’s potential. Am I wrong? And if so, what would I need to get the most out of this NAIM streamer?
Thank you in advance for your advice.

The nait 5 is perfectly suitable. Source first etc.

There was someone on this forum running a CDS3 into an original Nait 5. You hardly can oversource a Nait 5, it’s a gem of an amp.

I’d be tempted to try the nd5xs2 with it.

I would say that the ND5XS is in no way outclassed by the Nait 5. If anything it’s the other way round. In addition, be aware that this is an old streamer with limited connection options. An ND5XS2 would be a much better choice.

Mmmm, I understand… You’re the second to tell me, so maybe I’ll think about it. Thank you for your feedback

Hi Chris you posted this reply in a previous forum:
For what it’s worth, my dealer doesn’t agree with that. I was discussing options with him a couple of weeks ago, and he said he’d compared them when the new ND5 arrived, and thought the NDX was still better. But of course, you don’t have to agree with him. I shall reserve judgment until I’ve had a proper demo.
Reading your reply, have you changed your mind about the ND5 XS?

In that post I was referring to the current ND5XS2. By comparison I found the original ND5XS which you referred to rather underwhelming.

OK, I misunderstood. Thanks for replying Chris

Just to be clear - you can’t power an ND5XS with a Flatcap 2, although you could still power the preamp stage of the Nait 5.

OK Andy, thank you for the additional information

When I had the ND5XS2, it also would not accept a power supply.

You’re right. The ND5 XS2 can’t use an external PSU. The ND5 XS could be used via Burndy cable with an external PSU (XP5 XS, XPS, 555PS), just not (as Andy points out) the Flatcap.

Unless they already have the ND5XS, which can present problems in streaming, they would be better off in my opinion with the ND5XS2.

Yes. It’s a much more capable player and has the benefit of the later streaming module.

I can’t speak to the capability but I would be very concerned about the streaming limitations. Sometimes a bargain is not always a bargain. If you add in the cost of a power supply for the ND5XS, plus the cost of the streamer itself, how far are you from the ND5XS2?

Which, along with no display, met my requirements very well…

Thank you all for your answers. I’ve given up on the XS and am now focusing on the xs2.
I really like this forum which allows me to get more answers than the Naim Hot Line… in France. Which is odd as it’s run by English people.
In short, I’m beginning to see things clearly and once again I’d like to thank the incredible efforts of the Naim community for clarifying things for me.
