I listen to my Neat Petite Classics and Nait 50 at near field listening, just over 2m.
The Petites are on Solid Steel SS6 stands with a slight toe in. I’ve had many Naim amps and speakers in my smaller listening room over the years - this is far and away my favourite Naim / speaker combo. The Petites do match very well indeed with the Nait 50.
When N50 was released the initial (some of them) impressions were it was kind of bright, which has always been my main concern with electronics. Currently my (serviced) Olive kit makes my ribbon tweeter ProAcs sing with no harshness at all, but the recent N50 prices might tempt me into taking a plunge in the end. I am also in a near field setup and reading the comments that it goes well with Neat’s ribbon tweeter is kind of reassuring.
I just have no idea where that might have come from… it’s the complete opposite, it is a very little hf attenuated if anything compared to some amps, which means I guess why it sounds more relaxed and free flowing, so in my opinion you need fast speakers to balance out. Warmish / cuddly speakers just sound uninspiring with the N50… in my opinion of course.
I thought the days of speakers with harsh tweeters were behind us now, surely?
I am new here, good day to everyone. After reading a lot in this post I think you are right Simon. In my search for speakers for the Nait 50 I tried a number of different speakers. I have the Dali Epicon2, but tried the Atc scm 11 and 19. I preferred the 11 over the 19, but in the end I spent weeks listening to the Russel K red50 speakers and I bought them. There is something about those little speakers which overwhelmed me in combination with the nait50.
The speed, dynamics, placement of instruments, and that bass, yes that punchi bass. Amazing.
Also the Dali’s proved to be a very good match with the nait50. Fast but so fast as the Russel K but it’s more than oké ! A deeper and punchier bass.
They are different speakers and to hear the difference i played form Qobuz via my ND5xs2 the performance of Rachmaninoff Symphonic dances by the Royal Concertgebouw orchestra, conductor Mariss Jansons. The Dali’s perform this music really beautifully, but what the Russel K speakers do with this music, fast and the placement of instruments wonderfull, as if I were sitting in the front row. Not agressive at all. Musically, whatever that means, is the right word I think.
And so my ideal speaker seems to be a mix of the Dali Epicon2 and the Russel K red50 speakers. Is there anyone who can make these?
Welcome, interesting comments… and yes ultimately when you get to peaks of performance you need to choose what is most important… there is simply not a universal speaker, or amp that can do it all.
There isn’t I know, but what those little Russel K speakers bring is remarkable. That’s not only imho but everybody who came by and listened to these speakers was very impressed.
Yep, they are good … they are some minor weaknesses around the porting frequency, but I am picking … I love mine.
Listening to one of my favourite albums right now, Johnny Cash, live at Folsom Prison I love hearing the effect on Johnny’s voice from his exuberant guitar playing as well as hearing his head going to and from the mic… that with the sound of the prisoner audience and Johnny’s interplay with them and the occasional intercom break in, and poor resonant acoustics of the room it really gives a sense of being there
I prefer the the slightly lower mid performance of the 19s… I sold my 11s a long time ago, so can’t comment on the 11s with the N50, but the 19s worked superbly well with the little amp… and the larger cabinet of the infinite baffle design of the 19 played to my tastes.
I’ve recently made the switch from a DAC V1/NAP100 to a Nait 50. My speakers are Spendor 11ohm LS3/5A from the early 90s and I use NACA5 cable.
I had my planar 6 going into the DAC via a Waxwing/toslink as well as using the asynchronous USB. Now I have a purely analogue setup.
I would say the DACV1/NAP100 is a lovely combo, but the Nait 50, for want of a better expression, really “grips” the speakers and produces a much more powerful, controlled and bass rich sound.
I’m in a smallish UK room, 4m x 3m. Next step: mounting the speakers on stands.
