Nait 5si AV mode buzzing from speakers

Is there a TV involved with this set up, these usually don’t have an earth?
I have a SN3 and I feed a Panasonic Blu-Ray player into the AV on the SN3.
The Panasonic Blu-Ray is then connected to my Panasonic TV via HDMI cable.
I get a buzz from the speakers this way.
I have an Icon Audio headphone amplifier fed from audio out via the streamer socket on the SN3, when that’s plugged into the wall the buzzing stops. So, when I’m watching a disc the headphone amplifier is always plugged in, it doesn’t have to be powered on.

Hi Dashing, thank you, yes there is a TV involved. The tv is connected via hdmi to the Marantz receiver, as is my Panasonic blu ray, and also the Sky Q box. The pre outs on the Marantz are connected to the AV input on the 5si via chord C line rca interconnect. Tried earthing the Marantz but had no effect.

Without reading further this should indicate that putting a Ground Loop Isolator inline for this one (?) link between your AV stuff and the audio should sort things out.

Hi Adam, thank you for your response. This was the first thing I tired. Bought a cheap £7 one from Amazon as I’d seen this on another thread, stating that it had cured the issue. With mi e it made a horrible loud buzzing noise, so I took it off straight away. It was plugged into the pre puts on the AV and the C Line connected to it, and the other end of the C line into the AV on the 5si.

my understanding is: havent tried using replaced RCA cable (budget price point/“who cares” about part quality for a test piece of kit…)

My visual of this setup (based on OPs descriptions) is the two RCA cables connecting pre and power amps (marantz to AV Bypass); that cable is stretched tight, vertical, and possibly a PERFECT ANTENNA!

Please try a regular length cable, with freedom to fall however it chooses, and see if that helps avoid some of the ‘noise’ pickup…

(apologies if pissing into wind, truly, Ido hope this helps)

Had the same issue from AV Mode on my 5si it was caused by the power supply to the Chord Qutest DAC (connected to AV mode RCA obvs) that was causing it - replaced the OEM power supply with ifi iPower X and it was perfect! Not exactly the same but I’m sure it’s fixable, good luck :crossed_fingers:t2:

It appears to me that this an issue related to connecting a double insulated device (i.e the Marantz which does not have an earth pin) to the Naim which has a chassis earth. You need to appreciate the difference between earth and signal ground.

Have you tried the touch test? Does the hum become reduced when touched, or not? If the former then probably an earth/ground issue. If the latter then multiple earths is probable. If you look on the ifi site then there is a good explanation and some products that address the issue. Worth taking a look at. If you do buy then a good returns policy eliminates the risk.

Good luck!

I have a mate who has a lot longer length RCA, which I will try and see if this helps.

I’ll star removing IEC’s and see if I can identify the offending item :+1:

I have tried the touch test, nothing happens it just stays the same. I will check out the Ifi page, I am also in contact with Russ Andrews, hopefully they can shed some much needed light on this issue. Still searching for a solution, it’s so irritating, not because it’s loud, but because I know it’s there!!

not so much ‘the length’, just free up the ‘run’…

anytime low level signals run parralel to high level signals… (etc)

having rcas same angle as most power cables I have seen ‘have similar issue’; a slight curl in the cable ir running at different angles as ‘falling’ stopped the sound occouring…

whilst I think the electrical fixits are more likely the cause/solution needed,… it might be possible it is something as simple as RCA placement (not so much cable brand or length, per se)
