I am new to the world of Naim. I have been gifted some NAM 402 speakers, I have found the details below about them. I’d really appreciate some suggestions for an amplifier to go with them, I’ve had a look and I honestly don’t know where to start! I have a budget of £200-500. Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks so much for all the responses - yes I was super chuffed to have been given them and have already seen the tread on them - its nice to have something rare.
First port of call would be the Naim dealers - often they carry secondhand Naim items, even very early stuff when they can get it. Otherwise, there’s online auction sites and also dedicated sales sites where you can buy privately. An online search will bring up various options.
TomTom Audio in St Alban’s usually has a huge s/h stock of Naim kit going back decades, and regularly gets very strong recommendations on this site (including from me!). Give them a ring and let them help you would be my advice.
I’m not the first to comment, that TT now have something of a reputation for excessive if not ambitious pricing. From personal experience, they eventually have to drop the price(s) to gain a sale - I had meanwhile bought elsewhere! IIRC it was offered with a guarantee for which zero parts were available, which didn’t make sense, to hold the item for a long time, eventually reducing by more than a third. Ymmv.
That high level of inventory doubtless has to include a cost, which the buyer funds!
How nice to have a rare speaker. Just one thought, if they have not been used for some time, given their age, you likely need to ascertain if the crossovers are adequately functioning, to ensure there is not a short, which an amp may not handle well.
Appreciate you are endeavouring to put them to use within a budget, but you may like to check with service department or a specialist speaker repairers like Wilmslow Audio, who could advise.
