NAP202/NAP200 channel dropped

A UnitiServe appears … keep going …

The 100 would only work with the 202 if you were using a Hicap. The 200 can provide power to the preamp without it.

I suggest you call Class A in Sheffield and see what they can do to get your 202 runnning. As a non-runner it won’t be easy to sell if you choose an alternative such as a 282.

Have you checked the balance control? It is often overlooked because it’s not visible!

Yep. That’s it until you get to the decommisioned Linn system. Pre-amp, couple of mono blocks, 2 box CD player and Tuner. Only bit that wasn’t Linn was the deck (Rega RP3) which I’m still using. I switched to Naim because Linn decided they were no longer going to service or repair CD players. Mine’s OK for now (or it was when I packed it up) but thought that was a bit cynical and would they decide to extend that policy to older products eventually.

I’m notoriously bad at selling on second hand hifi (cba) and it would just take up space if I didn’t get it fixed. As above, I still have a complete Linn System in boxes. I’d be happier trading in for something better though but transporting that many boxes to either Chester (Acoustica) or Warrington (Brady’s) would take a couple of trips at least. Thanks for the heads up on Class A. I’ll give them a call. I’m based in the NW so a trip over there isn’t the other end of the country. Brady’s is nearest for me but they don’t do in-house repairs but act as the middle man for Naim. You can’t send directly to Naim yourself. Do Class A do in-house repairs?

Please power up the NAC202 and test the balance control first as per @NeilS , above.

(The volume knob’s green LED flashes when it’s central.)

Class A are the only fully authorised Naim services centre in the UK other than Naim’s in-house service dept. If you call them, they can usually arrange carriage for you, or you can take the gear to Sheffield yourself. This may be an easier (and probably cheaper) alternative to having a dealer arrange a service at Naim.

Note that @NeilS who posted above actually works in the service dept at Naim so if you listen to anybody’s advice here, it should be his!

I wasn’t aware of a balance control on the 202. Is it on the back panel? No idea how it would have been driven to one side. I’m not at home till this evening do can’t do anywthing about it yet. I assumed it was factory set to zero.
Edit: OK got it now. I use the remote for the Qute2. I need to dig out the other controller with the balance buttons on it. Again though, as the 202 controller is sitting in a draw with no batteries in it how could the balance be altered without it? The only balance I was aware of was the menu driven one on the Qute2 but I assume that’s only if you have speakers directly connected to it, although it does have a software switch for “no speakers”. I have a symmetric set up so balance isn’t something I’ve needed to bother with.

Probably by spurious IR being emitted from other sources - TV screens, lighting, remotes for other devices, misinterpreted commands from a dedicated remote etc.

Let us know what you find.

Neil.

That’s a good point.

I had that issue when powering up the Amp from a few weeks away I had the issue of one channel being lost. After panicking thinking what it may be the balance control popped into my head. It may have been the result of me sitting on the remote (no other remotes in the room) or similar but when I centred the balance all was well again. It has never happened again since.

It’s worth checking.

I’m desperate for @NeilS 's foc ‘fix’ to solve it on this one.

That’s it guys. The balance had been wound all the way over. All that messing around and it was that simple in the end. I’d resigned myself to parting with a few hundered quid for a repair or replacement. All’s good again so thanks for all your help. Still no idea how it’s happened but spurious IR signals from somewhere is the cause it would seem. That’s a lesson learned and I won’t forget that one.

Anyway, from another suggestion from Chris in this protracted thred; I’ve decided that I’m going to upgrade the Qute2 to an NDX2 asap. Longer term I’ll look to upgrading the amplification to a 282/250 I think.

It’s time I got busy offloading some hi fi I’m not going to use anymore and let somebody else get the benefit of it and to help towards funding future upgrades, which won’t be cheap.

Wasn’t it just. A timely intervention by @NeilS. I was about to ring up ClassA to arrange a repair about the same time he posted so thanks Neil.
The threads been useful in other ways to. I managed to find all the user manuals I’d carefully misplaced. It also gave me chance to have a long overdue tear-down of the system for a good clean up and cable routing and with a bit of re-arrangement the HiCap is now in service.
I’ve been aware for a long time that the Qute2 is the weak link in the system so I’ve now decided to upgrade that as soon as we are into the New Year.
