I’m going to disagree - you can get much newer and/or recently upgraded to DR models for substantially less than this. Hold out for a better deal on another one or make a (much lower) offer.

I agree with oscpercy, this seems expensive for a 2001 upgraded in 2016. It’s already half way to possibly needing its next service.

I say possibly as I’m currently running a 2006 500 non dr which according to naim estimates is 3 years overdue a service. It’s sounding the best Ive heard it over the last few years and showing no signs of needing a service yet.

To put things in perspective I purchased a 2001 500DR, which was upgraded to DR in 2017. New head unit in 2017 as well. Cost was £6000 on auction.

I don’t think you will get a deal like that.

I think £7500 to £8000 for an older unit is about right. £10k to £11k for a 2017 unit. 2022 unit £15k.

These are the prices that I think are about right.

Wait for right price, or buy newer. Newer the better if you have the funds. Service costs are £1800 for the two units. Plus the 500DR will be a way for a while.

Don’t get a 500 unless it’s cheap and recently serviced. You will always be wanting a 500DR.

Great advice.

Nope not me  Not for a second I’ve had those thoughts to be honest. Mainly because I love my 500 non DR

Dan’s about right with his DR pricing but there’s always the chance of being in the right place at the right time with the cash. It does happen. Not often but I’ve had some pretty good luck over the years and bagged some real bargains. Just be patient.

How old or new do you want a DR500 to be? Again, more about your end game system strategy.

I’ve had both non DR and DR 500’s. They are quite different. The DR is the better amp without doubt but I could quite happily listen to 135’s let alone a non-DR’d 500.

Thanks all, the £1800 service costs Dan mentions probably explains the 2013 non - DR going for £4.2k on the bay as it was originally listed at £5k.

I may well try a £7k offer on the upgraded DR one listed and if that doesn’t work I’ll wait. I’ve found Tom Tom audio has some listed but not many other sites. I’ll keep on searching :+1:

Really appreciate the great advice.

Hi, ideally if a DR version I would want it to be 2017ish so it has a few years to go before needing a service. If I could get a non-DR version that has been serviced recently at the 4k mark I would definitely be tempted.

Ps. I don’t really think I have an end game thought through. I’m very, very happy with my 252 which I got brand new from a dealer at a great price as it was a demo unit but had never been used and I also love my NDX2. I was thinking to get a 500 and then maybe a 555ps for the NDX2 and stop there for the very foreseeable future (and due to funds).

Is this your main source you will run with a 500? Do you have a 552?

Hi Mike, I just edited my above post. I have a 2022 252 owned from new.

What are your sources?

NDX2 is my primary source. I also have a Rega P1 Plus but I rarely use it and so purposefully went for a cheap turntable as it’s mainly so I can occasionally play my old vinyl and box sets I enjoy collecting :+1:

Tom Tom Audio are not cheap. They will get someone to buy at their prices because of reputation.

Buying from dealer is obviously more expensive. Usually they want to break even on it. Or make some profit.

Ebay auction is where the deals are to be had.

Or buy from dealer at reasonable price. They won’t take £7k if it’s on at £9.9k. Someone else will pay £9.5k.

Thanks Dan, it’s got a few surfaces scratches on it that are visible from the front so I think I’ll hold out and wait then. I might go for a 555ps in the meantime as 500s don’t seem to come up very often.

I don’t know what your funds are like or what you’re planning to get.

But it sounds like you’re going down same route as me. Full 500DR system.

If that’s the case it doesn’t matter what order you get it.

Earlier on this year there were alot of good deals about. Things have quietened down a bit now with the deals.

I have bought 2 555PSDRs fairly recently. They generally go for £4k to £4.5k for 2016 to 2022 models. Try to get one in 500 finish if you can.

Good choice to go 500!

You might have read my thread as well. I have gone 500dr and I really love what it does.
I would go DR as I have done as they might be newer and not so much in need of an instant service. I would also have gone for a non dr, but sending this heavy beast to the uk once I have it was turning me down.

The upgraded one for 9,9k is too expensive - try 7k as an offer.
Dans price was made for @Dan_M but is not representative. Mine 500dr is a early 2017 model and I payed 9k (GBP). Price was fine.
11k for 2021 is also very good!
Wait and as you might be living in the uk the 500 come much more often than on our ground here.

Are you building towards a full 500 system then?

You won’t get those deals now. You got a brilliant deal @Drago.

There’s nothing about on a deal right now. Prices have inched up, or gone back to normal!

It’s arguably not a good deal though if the system becomes very imbalanced, hence what is the end goal here? A NDX2/Rega P1/252/500 would be an unusual set-up, with the 500 exposing the source limitations.

Hi Mike, I’m sure over time I probably will strive for a full 500 system but given my 252 is new and after reading about Dan’s and others experience, I’m really keen to start with the 500. I have no interest in upgrading my turntable, but in time I could move up the ladder on my streamer.
