NAS Drive for Uniti 2

I have a Uniti 2 streaming music in MP3 format from a WD My Cloud NAS drive currently running Twonky media server 8.5.2 (the latest version from back in 2021 so I assume the last ever). I find that I have to restart the media server quite often (from the WD My Could config screen accessed via a web browser) otherwise the Unity 2 gets stuck saying ‘Restoring History xx%’. There’s nothing wrong with the WiFi connection. Questions:

  1. Is there a better more up to date app than Twonky that will run on my WD My Cloud?
  2. Do I need to get a new NAS drive that’s more reliable and supports a better media server app.

Thanks for any help or advice given.

Richard.

Depending upon how much music you have, and how much money you can spend, you might be better off with a multi disc, fault tolerant NAS from the likes of Synology, QNAP, etc. I believe some will even allow ripping from a USB attached CD drive….?

Then you have a wide choice of server software that will run natively on the NAS of your choice.

Yes, the forum favourite NAS’s are Synology or QNAP.
Keep it simple and get a 1-bay model, HDD or SSD, and use your WD as a back-up, Synology have an excellent Backup program, haven’t used it but QNAP has the same.

Media server (UPnP/DLNA) is either Asset UPnP or Minimserver.
Asset is very easy to use (IME) and in most opinions ideal for the less complex searches needed for rock, jazz folk etc. Minim is reputedly best for classical searching composers etc…
