Nat 05 query

OK, in the end I found that I had a bad triplexer connection. Sorry it wasn’t a Naim related issue but good to meet you all and giving me a good impression of the forum. I am sure I will be delving further into the Naim world soon to complement the tuner.

I’m glad you have sorted it out. So how come your FM4 worked ok? It’s hard to believe it’s that much more sensitive than the NAT05…

Oowff!!

Glad the OP has got it sorted on his 05.

Hi all. Having got a load of useful and interesting posts on this topic I have a more mundane query (apologies if it is incorrect to carry on the same thread). I am getting an intermittent problem with the sound on the NAT 05 and having changed leads and amps to check it appears to be the DIN connection so far as I can tell. I was wondering if this is a common fault and whether the DIN socket and internal connected parts should be quite loose (I seem to recall reading that Naim did this to isolate sections of the unit but may be making that up).

Sorry to hear you have a connection problem.
No this is not a common fault, considering the huge numbers of these sockets on all Naim equipment.
Yes Naim DIN socket chassis is installed deliberately loose, it can be moved up/down/sideways about half a millimetre or so in the NAT-05 case.

Thanks for that. Of course, there is no choice of audio connection on this tuner so the DIN socket has to be used and I guess expensive to repair. A bit disappointing as I have just acquired a matching Nait 5i to keep it company which seems in perfect order so far.

I had forgotten about the rural factor.
When I had my NAT01 I used a ribbon aerial and it worked well in a city environment, but when I came home to the Cotswolds it failed to pickup a signal, despite living relatively high up near the escarpment. A basic Ron Smith solved the problem; it works well now despite losing a few elements to pigeon activity.

Replacing a DIN socket is not expensive, far from it.
Depending where you’re located, there are a number of Naim service specialist’s around UK, ring them for a quote.

IIRC the DIN is PCB mounted and so it may just be a broken solder joint - a relatively straightforward repair that may be possible to be done by one of the Naim dealers who also have their own in house technician (Moorgate, Grahams etc…)

Thanks all, will look into it. The seller insists it was perfect and I should have said something sooner but it takes a while to listen to it and change components to isolate the fault.

Just also checked and the tuner DIN socket has way more movement than the amp DIN, like several millimetres.

Yes thats normal, not all Naim models are the same, my NAT has more movement than the Supernait, the NDX has no movement.

OK, so not a factor then.

I would say not. Mine is loose too.
