I have a NC 333,332’250,NVCTT system. It used to be that if auto standby was set to the default of 20 minutes, then record playing would stop at 20 minutes. Has Naim ever corrected thus? I was once advised to set auto standby to never. Is this the preferred way ti handle this?
Hi @Jaybar
Sorry, I can’t help you with that, as I don’t have a turntable with my NC system. My experience is to leave it set as always on for the best listening experience, and only switch off and unplug if thunder / lightning is expected.
BTW you started a thread a week ago about this same subject - why not continue with that?
Perhaps @Richard.Dane can help you, as well as merge threads?
Can anyone comment about playing records? @Richard.Dane do you have any thoughts?
Let’s ask the system’s designer, @110dB
In the meantime, why not set the standby to an hour or two hours? The latter would give you three albums and you’d still benefit from power saving once you’ve stopped listening for the day.
Sorry Jaybar, I don’t know, as I have not had any hands-on with the NC kit. One for @110dB or Naim support I think.
@110dB Hi. Any thoughts on auto standby when playing records with a NC system, including the NVCTT?
It is. Playback will stop after 20 minutes or whatever is set in the auto stby mode. Leave it on never.
Hi @Jaybar
The NAC 332 will remain awake while music is playing and will only enter standby after approximately 20 minutes of silence.
So when playing vinyl, the 332 should stay awake throughout playback and then go into standby around 20 minutes after the record has finished.
If ‘Instant On’ is selected (not ‘auto standby’), the unit will remain powered on continuously and will only enter standby if the standby button is pressed manually.
FYI: The 332 uses a dedicated low-current music detection circuit. This circuit checks for the presence of music approximately every 1 minute for a fraction of a second. If music is detected, the sensing circuit switches off again for a further minute. If no music is detected, it remains active for 19 minutes before the unit enters standby. This approach ensures the music sensing circuitry is active for only a very small proportion of the time and therefore has no impact on sound quality.
One point to note is that the 332 will not automatically wake from standby when vinyl playback is restarted; it must be woken manually or be left in Instant On mode.
FYI
With products that don’t connect to the internet, such as the NAC 332 and NAP 250, they have two settings. Auto standby 20 mins, or Instant on. Via a manual switch on the rear panel.
The internet, or App connected products, such as NSS 333, have App menus. These menus mean there is a finer granularity of control.
Hi @Jaybar ,
The music sensing circuit is ‘input agnostic’ and will work on any selected input. If there is music, it will not enter standby. After 20 minutes of silence it will go to 0.5W standby. A remote or button press will wake the 332.
@110dB will I damage anything by setting standby to never?
Hi @110dB . Thank for your technical information. Anyway my system behaves as @Jaybar described. After having read your post I made a quick test. I set the auto stby time to 5 minutes. Played a record from tt and the system went to stby after 5 minutes. Then I played a Blu-ray and again everything stopped after 5 minutes. The only source unaffected is the NSS 333.
For info the NVC TT is connected to NAC 332 to input 6 via a 8 pin din while the Blu-ray player is connected to input 1 via xlr cable. All the system 332/333/350/Nvc tt is set to auto stby instead of instant on. Is there anything wrong in my Nac 332?
No, not at all @Jaybar , traditionally Naim systems run 24/7.
The auto standby feature is required to meet standby regulations in some markets.
This would be lovely if this would work as designed. It doesn’t though. Had reported this bug with the dealer years ago and repeatedly on this forum. Not working on phono and av
Hi @Peppo62
Thank you for the extra information. I think I know what is happening.
If you are setting auto standby to ‘5 mins’, this means you are using the App.
As you’ve seen, the NAC 332 auto standby is setup on its rear panel. It is either set to ‘instant on’ or ‘auto standby 20 minutes’. It sounds like you’ve done this on your entire system.
I’ve tested the NAC 332 in a TT only system and it behaved as expected. I will try with a NSS 333 later today. I suspect the system automation is turning the pre-amp off when the streamer incorrectly thinks there is no music.
Do you have the ZigBee system automation setup?
(I.e. when the volume is turned on the pre-amp, the streamers display show the volume number, the app can change inputs on the pre-amp etc)
Thank you for the info @RexManning
Yes. I have the ZigBee automation set up.
@110dB When the streamer turns off the preamp because it thinks there is no music—Can this be corrected ?
Hi @Jaybar,
Yes, that logic can be fixed, and I’m sorry that you had to discover it.
The intended behaviour is that when the streamer and preamplifier are paired, the streamer’s standby automation will only place the preamplifier into standby if the preamplifier is currently selected to the streamer’s input.
If the preamplifier is set to another input, such as Phono, the streamer is aware of this and should only put itself into standby, leaving the preamplifier to manage its own standby behaviour via its music-sensing circuitry.
I’ve tested this today and can confirm the same behaviour that you are seeing.
I’ll raise an official software issue for investigation and obtain a Jira reference number. Once I have that, I’ll keep an eye on its progress and let you know when a fix is expected to be released.
In the meantime, the least disruptive workaround is to set the streamer’s Auto Standby setting to ‘never’.
@Richard.Dane Thanks for suggesting I reach out to @110dB. They tested it and there is indeed a bug. If the 333 and 332 are paired then record play will stop if auto standby other than never is selected. I am using an NVCTT powered by the 332. Until it is addressed @110dB suggests setting auto standby to never as a work around. Again, thanks for your suggestion.
