Thank you Robert! That is it. Of course most of my library is ripped aiff. So now i need to find a upnp server that will run on ios 10.13.6 and read aiff.
Or convert all your aiff files to flac.
Universal Media Server has a software version that installs on ios 10.13.6. I installed it, the nd5xs sees it, and see the iTunes folder, can see the music files, but they wont play. for the love of Christmas!
Just use Asset. Most of us here do.
Asset requires ios 11. I currently only have 10.13.6. I’ve now downloaded plex to my pc and am having such good luck with that working on apple tv, the nd5xs seems to like it and my Samsung Galaxy seems to like it also. I could decomotion the macbook and simply serve everything off the PC. I like having a separate mac server type machine that stays on and only serves up photos and music. Anyway just rambling now . . .
The nd5xs is now working great and is a big step up from my Peachtree DAC*IT!
Thanks all for the help!
Jriver media center version 23 appears to work on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6
You can download that from their website and try it for 30 days.
It’s an old version of the software so bear that in mind.
I got plex to install on the old mac and the nd5xs now sees the plex server. However now when i choose an AIFF file to play the nd5xs says “unsupported file format”.
I downloaded the plexamp app to an old iphone and plugged it into the front usb dock and can play the aiff files just fine.
It seems the nd5xs is unwilling to play aiff files through the upnp channel for some reason.
Because it is not a supported format. It has to be Wav or Flac…as far as I know
The ND5 XS can play audio files, including iTunes libraries, stored on a computer or on network storage over UPnP™. It can play the full range of audio file and stream formats at up to 24bit/192kHz resolution: WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF , Windows Media-formatted files, MP3, M4A, MMS, AAC and Ogg Vorbis.https://media.focal-naim.com/dam/nd5-xs/nd5xs-brochure_uk.pdf
Maybe, but you just said it is not working. I have owned four different Naim streamers and only ever played Flac or Wav files.
The ND5XS is first generation streamer, that may of lost support for some features over time. Are you on the latest firmware?
Yes, the unit’s firmware has been upgraded to the latest.
The weird part is that i can play the files via my 10 year old panasonic tv’s DLNA player and into the nd5xs’s optical port or with the apple tv into tv and out the optical port. I was just hoping to not have the tv on and be able to listen to my music files that reside on the mac.
I think Im going to try upgrading the mac from Sierra to Monterrey and then try dbpoweramp’s Asset dnla player.
Why not simply convert the files to Flac or Wav, which will play?
Because i still like serving up the files via itunes and i do not think itunes likes flac.
Some converters allow you to convert AIFF to AIFF, which I admit sounds completely pointless, but may work in your case.
I seem to be able to play an aiff file by using my apple tv music app which is connected to my tv via hdmi and the the tv is connected to the nd5xs via the tosslink. The sound is good. Sometimes I’d like to listen to my the aiff files in my itunes library without turning on the tv. Id like to use the upnp option and i’ve heard that the upnp option sound resolves at a higher resolution maybe making it sound better. Is that correct?
