Bob - only my 2p worth but in my experience of new Naim gear (282/250/SC) - is that it takes a few hours say about say 100 2 or 3 weeks - and then all is fine. I can’t imagine why this box should be any different?
You too
A lot of FUD being spouted IMO by some posters…
In my experience, I have usually home demoed run in equipment. The demo is usually over a week, occasionally longer depending on the demand of the component… and I let warm up over night… that approach has not let me down yet… and has occasionally stopped me purchasing components I had otherwise set my mind on buying by reading this forum, notably the NDS of which there was a lot of hype about a few years back… but over several auditions, different models and different 555PSUs just didn’t do the magic for me.
I personally have zero experience buying new Naim kit only a UQ2 (demo in store)or home demoing so I suppose I shouldn’t comment because my opinion is based on second hand infomation from reading this forum but I still believe if the unit is undamaged and as new condition that Naim should offer to refund Stephan if he still isn’t happy after a replacement unit. This is a customer after all who has spent quite serious money with Naim £20,000 alone on streamers.
That won’t be a Naim matter, but a retailer matter… but I agree it would be a helpful gesture from the retailer. The retailer could then negotiate with the distributor/Naim if there was any inappropriate costs to be recovered or shared.
If it is RFI, then yes the better and more resolving a component is the more susceptible it becomes to external effects. Think of it like suspension on a racing car… you wouldn’t expect a F1 racing car to get very far across a muddy field… but give it a race track it will be enjoyably performant.
RFI is not something you can simply filter or ‘earth’ and it disappears… the best course of external RFI is prevention, not cure.
Sure I would not expect a top end system to create its own RFI.
If you think you have a RFI issue… a good detection method without using more specialist equipment is to use the untuned AM radio method.
Get a LW, MW or SW radio… place the radio really close to mains leads of suspect devices, the device itself, the light bulb or even the leads going into your audio.
Tune off station into hiss… place the radio close, if you hear a whining, rasping or buzzing sound… that is RFI. Try switching between bands … you might notice higher frequency computer or network noise on SW, where as bad powersupplies, heating pump motor, badly designed LED lighting, solar panel inverters, PowerLineAdapters etc will be loud across all the bands.
You may find the interference peaks and troughs as you turn the dial perhaps more on SW… that can be a sign that the RFI is resonating in or near your house…again prevention really recommended if this is the case.
Now almost certainly you will hear some RFI in this method, most electrical/electronic devices, especially for consumers, are going to produce some otherwise they will be too expensive to manufacture … it’s degrees of it you are interested in… and checking none or very minor amounts near your audio equipment, audio equipment mains leads and speaker leads.
The French word “con”, as in the film title “diner des cons” has a similar meaning and is I think the origin of the phrase “excuse my French” as an apology for swearing due to it’s similarity in pronunciation to a certain English word.
Thanks, I took my wife’s radio, the one she uses in the morning, and when walking around I really heard the differences in sound/noise. Worst were a led lamp in the kitchen which had a strong whining sound and the two ovens a really high buzzing noise. Impressing. Thanks once more for the education.
As this is an internet forum it seemed reasonable to use an internet acronym: hence FUD = Fear Uncertainty & Doubt…
I think FUD as a term originally started to describe a sales technique… to sow fear uncertainty and doubt about a competitor or potential outcome ie doing nothing in the minds of a potential buyer. That is it was a play on the expression ‘What goes thud in the night?’. Certainly was used before wide spread use of the web and not specific to IT sales.
Well, I’d never heard of it and needed to look it up. I prefer the urban dictionary definition.
Yeah don’t disagree … more colourful… however the meaning I refer to I have only seen the term capitalised when describing fear uncertainty and doubt.

Ok so I’m not going to read 196 reply’s. Just make sure your sl2 are setup correctly that means tweeters are flush with the surrounds, if not that can be a harsh sound. Sorry didn’t read all post my bad.
I’m Scottish and as with other words they can be used in friendly or unfriendly terms. It all depends on what context they are used or how they are said. I’ve been known to be a fud on many occasions.
There was a joke doing the rounds years ago:
Q: Did you hear about the transsexual who fell off a cliff?
A: She landed with a Fud.
This was not intended to offend or have any malice, it was just a play on words.
Not trying to be funny: but if you are the kind of hobbiest who would enjoy A/B testing CD versus streaming, all of the Naim CD players from the CD5X up are very satisfying. I have a CD5X, and CD555; both are delightful, and set benchmarks for everything else.
Nick
Any updates on this??
Hey Stephan, how your nd555 is sounding now, one week later, with the new burndys?
