Hi, I need to replace my ND5XS screen and intend to buy one from eBay. However I would have no idea how to do the fitting of the new screen. It appears the New Zealand dealer in Wellington whom I would normally send it to is no longer. Is there anyone out there in NZ who knows of someone who could do this?
If you read previous threads on this subject, you should be able to do this yourself. The instructions are clear.
Yes the instructions provided by the French seller of the replacement screens are clear. You do have to get close and very intimate with the internals of the unit though and it’s fiddly (from my experience of changing the screen in a Unitilite).
But even if you can’t do it yourself, any TV etc repair place should be able to do it easily enough. It would take them about half an hour.
If you’re in Wellington, there is a HiFi restorer in the Hutt Valley who did a really good job with a DR upgrade and service on my NAP300 (all authorised by the previous Naim importer).
Real Music Co in Wellington who were the previous distributor will still do the work if they have the screen in stock. Its a lot more expensive than doing it yourself via the French screen supplier.
…if you’ve got the parts, and don’t want to do the repair yourself, give Glen at Cowan Audio Services a call. He was super helpful with my upgrade, and did a fantastic job.
Thanks for the info - will keep him in mind. However I managed to replace the screen myself. Bought from a French guy on eBay who sent very clear instructions with photos on a pdf. Everything was simple except for inserting the flat wiring cable. Wasn’t sure which end to remove and the clamp was extremely small and fidgety - but I reckon if I can do it anyone could. New screen works like a charm
Just for anyone else here who is contemplating doing this, you don’t use the new flat ribbon cable unless you damage the existing one. The clamp to release it from the screen PCB is a small black clip lying on the PCB where the cable end is and you wiggle it back a few mm away from the socket until the ribbon cable is free. Very difficult to describe but easy to do once you find it! A good light helps you to see it!
Yes - I wasn’t sure if I was meant to release it from the screen or from the PCB. Figured it was the PCB so I would then have a new cable. Not sure why they supply a new flat ribbon cable tho - I guess, as you say in case you damage it.
They do actually say somewhere that it’s a spare in case the of damage. But there are several versions of the instructions for different units and they do vary in details like that.
Not sure if I did the right thing here (although the new screen works perfectly). But I released the cable as in the image, and attached the new cable from the new screen to where I released the old one.
It makes no difference.
There isn’t a right or wrong way. The instructions tell you to use the old cable as leaving that alone is less likely to cause damage to the main board than releasing the old cable, but it’s all at the margins and if you are careful, which I’m sure you were, you can do either.
