ND5XS2 new hum problem

Do you not read/listen to the news? I don’t think that checking for transformer hum in a piece of hifi counts as an ‘essential’ activity. That is really silly advice

Please don’t patronise me. I am well aware of the rules and as I said, I suggested a neighbour. The rules say to avoid unnecessary journeys and asking a neighbour is hardly an essential journey and it’s perfectly possible to maintain the appropriate safe distance. The neighbour could dangle an extension lead out of the window… It’s down to the OP to apply the necessary element of common sense.

Common sense says stay in doors, simple.
Its not patronising you, its simply saying your advice is very poor, get over it.
What if an accident occurs? Emergency services involved, more exposure unneccesarily…
The reason I was outside officer is that I was testing the hum on my streamer…that will cover it.

It’s not patronising to point out silly advice. If you see it that way that is your problem not mine. You may have seen my ITU colleagues pleading with the public to avoid all unnecessary contact and Chris Whitty asking the public to behave as though they have Covid. But clearly you know more than he does

Meanwhile, back at the castle…

I cannot add to some of the suggestions so far to address your humming streamer, but would say to stick with it, whether that is an exchange or you find the fault. Its a fantastic streamer… obviously when it operates silently, which you have seen and heard yourself. Best of luck.

Hi all,
As for the virus bubble and so forth, all four members of our family had the great fortune of catching the virus early November. It wasn’t exactly amusing but nobody was hospitalized and we are all more or less fine, except for me with some lingering and mysterious after-effects that doctors cannot properly explain or treat. We have all tested negative since then and are supposed to be “immunized” for atleast 3 more months, dixit the doc.

Therefore, I would only check the cursed streamer at my son’s home when convenient and safe to do so.

Adding Covid to the Hum would probably put me over the edge and WE DON’T WANT THAT!

Brgds.

Hi @Neilb1906,
Indeed, the frustration level is off the chart for this silly problem probably due to a horrific 2020, a nasty family bout with the virus, my employment will soon be history (airline) and now a big fat Naim HUM to spoil one of the last remaining pleasures I have on this Earth, my d@#ned music. So, yes, I hope this can be resolved without having to undergo open-heart surgery to boot. Brgds.

@anon4489532 Yes, between playing mad scientist with my streamer and watching the grass grow in Winter I’ll be sufficiently occupied and probably in a pretty terrible mood too. Fortunately, I have other systems in the house for music so I will wait before popping those cyanide tablets. Brgds.

Well, if the officer owned Naim I’d probably get a pass, an understanding look and a police escort back home…

I’d like to apologise for my suggestion that the OP take the streamer to a neighbour to check for the hum. I wasn’t thinking and it was clearly a bad suggestion. It was of course meant well, but I should have thought more deeply before suggesting it. I’m very sorry. @crispyduck was quite right to call me out.

My revised suggestion is that the OP does the in house checking to try to identify the culprit. If that fails it’s either a case of waiting until it is safe to meet others or, given that may be some months ahead, to arrange with the dealer for it to be collected by courier for checking. If the unit still hums after everything else in the house has been switched off, the dealer will no longer be able to say ‘it’s something in your house’.

@anon4489532 Appreciate the suggestions and sorry to have caused some misunderstandings amongst members.

No worries - this whole pandemic is making all of us stressed and at times it can be hard to think straight. Keep up the good work at the vaccination centre - it is much needed

This whole pandemic thing really does make us a tad testy. you notice it everywhere.
I had a short but slightly terse exchange with @Haim a few days ago, that was unintentionally initiated by me. It was just the way I worded the post, I was calling myself stupid, but upon reflection, I could see that anyone would have assume that I was calling everyone stupid. That’s just not my style.
It was all flagged and deleted before I could apologize to Haim, so this will have to do.
I’ll make sure I proofread better before I post from now on.

Dave,

No need for apologies. I did not even remember the little exchange I had with Chris months ago about my NAIM gear hiccups and had to look it up. I just thought that it was obvious that my post was about my own personal experience which did not reflect on anyone’s else ownership and I felt that there was no room to add anything or argue about. I could probably have used more polite words myself. Keep enjoying your Hi Fi system and more importantly the music.

Thanks Haim. Best of luck to you and yours while the world is getting vaccinated.
And yes, enjoy the music, at least we don’t have to go out for that.

In telling other members of the forum what they should or shouldn’t do, everyone needs to keep a sense of proportion and bear in mind what the Chief Medical Officer said to the BBC this morning about the very low risk of transferring the virus outdoors. None of us know everything about what people are coping with in their lives.

Not at all. If you could see what conditions are like inside the ITU I work in you would want everyone to minimise contacts to the absolute minimum

Did Mr Whitty say it was ok to leave home to get a hifi streamer tested?
No.
Wind it in mate, its that attitude that leads to the situation we are in.
The first question we should ask ourselves before leaving home is " is it essential? "
If the answer is yes, then go to second question, is it permissable.
Not the other way round.
You should be ashamed of yourself.

There are clearly very strong feeling on both sides of this issue, however I do think enough has been said. This is after all a hifi forum and not the place for rancour and unpleasantness.
