Many thanks marcusman, have just run through the update and we are now on the latest version
Awesome. Enjoy Internet Radio and increased SQ across the board(at least for me)
Thankyou for your response.
Yes the SCDR, possibly sets me up for one final upgrade to a 52, I really like the JV era boogie that the 72/250 - 52/250 delivers.
I’ve been using Naims for 42 years now, and have heard most models including Statements, so I’m trying to optimise the JV sound without going too far “over the top”.
thankyou all respondees to my query.
I wouldn’t go for the DR version if you want to keep that boogie factor.
Yes, agreed about trying to find non-DR power supplies.
Unfortunately we’re so isolated here… it’s hard to get anything on the extreme west of down-under.
For example, Covid only arrived in late 2023 for me.
Your 72 and 250 are great, but…
I am one more saying that ND5XS2 into your nDAC is the way to get more SQ for a reasonable price. However, if you do that, the source really will have a lot more to give than a 72 can really show.
Even a naked ND5XS2 without nDAC is better than a 72 shows imho - in Tassie, I use ND5XS2 with 82/HC/250, and an nDAC for that would now be the next obvious upgrade.
An 82 would be the next step here, once the source is sorted. However, jumping to 52/SC would be a much bigger change, esp if you really value more detail, clarity, neutrality and quietness as well as boogie.
Finally, have your Hicap and 250 ever been serviced?
Thanks for your msg Nick, HiCap and 250 been recapped twice.
Initially the Core/nDAC into 72 was very good, so I thought I may as well optimise the nDAC and blind-purchased a PS555DR for the nDAC and was extremely staggered and delighted with the all round sonic improvement. I would expect the Core to be a (same or) better audio source than a ND5xs2 …
There was another appender who for some reason had to re-insert their 72/HC whilst having their 552 repaired, and expressed no disappointment with their ND555 feeding the 72, and indicated some tracks were more appealing through their 72/HC.
A 52/SC has always been a hidden end goal to maximise my JV inspired goals. But as you already know in OZ, obtaining pink diamonds is far easier than finding “specific sweet-spot Naim boxes”.
There’s one for sale with a dealer in NZ that might be an option for you. A pair of 135s too.
It could be anything but you’ll lose the Naim sound.
And walking into a Perth pub where the bar is 100% lined with Mullet hairdos is easier still…!
But on a serious note, purchasing any form of Naim box is virtually impossible here now, let alone anything ex-dem, refurbished, vintage etc….I think Surrounds can still order current range items in (well, they could last time I asked), but you’re buying blind, forget demos…
Just don’t know what Westan are up to
I heard via the Midland store that WestCoast HiFi were going to be a (renewed) Focal and now Naim outlet – but, really…!?
Good luck in your search. I presume you may have enquired with Andrew at Surrounds?, he sometimes has a few feelers on some used kit – I believe he’s a 6-pack Olive owner so his tastes are in your lane at least…!
SC
I’ve been a continuous Naim customer in Perth since late 70’s:
- Albert’s HiFi in Vic Pk,
- Vince Ross in Hay Street, and then Stirling H’way
- Surround Sounds - on both sides of Stirling H’way
- A2A Subiaco
Andrew @SS has ordered a new ND5xs2 via Westan for me.
With careful forum research, buying specifc Naim models “blind” is okay with me : Nait2, nDAC, Core, PS555DR and now a ND5xs2.
Thanks for all the advice.
I know the problem!
Gumtree, eBay and patience can be your friends - some great Naim kit turns up on occasion.
Having said that, I looked at how to buy what when getting a hifi for the Tassie house. I decided that buying from eBay in the UK (and getting 2 old boxes from my loft serviced) was a faster and cheaper option.
Shipping to Tassie and declaring everything properly was pretty easy - in Oz, the people who do this stuff are generally patient and very willing to help. Even suffering the iniquities of tax didn’t stop that being the best and cheapest option.
If you can say that you have owned it for 6 months before shipping, it counts as ‘yours’ for import purposes and you could be waiting that long on Gumtree for any particular Naim box, especially the older and most expensive kit like 52 and 135s.
In addition, if you buy from a UK dealer, they can get serviced anything that needs it before shipping, and several can help with putting you in touch with good people for the shipping too. It was all much less effort than feared, as was getting a Grahams Hydra to power the lot with an Australian plug on it.
Finally, I can only agree that a Core is a great source. Before packing anything, we compared all the boxes in marathon session.
Multiple listeners found CD rips on the Core (into Wimbledon’s NDX2/XPSDR/52/SC/300DR) to be indistinguishable from the CD player directly on my (excellent) CDS2. Playing Core through ND5XS2 was less good because its DAC is less good than the NDX2, but that won’t apply on your case. With several CDs we could not find any streaming version on Qobuz or Tidal that we liked as much as the old CD, whether that was played via CDS2 or Core into NDX2/XPSDR.
Good luck!
