Hello, have looked around for a bit for a answer for this but tbh I became more confused.
I have a Mac mini as a DAS that I use for plex media. I have recently stopped paying for Roon based on having a number of playback issues. I am aware my NDX2 has server mode but that is for other devices to play the music that is plugged into the USB port (from my understanding).
Is there a way while using the naim app, to have my NDX2 and Atom HE play music off of my DAS Mac mini without using Roon.
Plex apparently has a DLNA / UPNP server mode built in, but disabled by default. Enable that, and you should see your content on your Naim app under “Servers”.
Here’s a “how to” link, but if it’s removed as not allowed, just google “Plex UPNP” and go from there.
EDIT: Yep, works fine! On your Plex page, use Wrench icon to get to Settings; scroll down on left menu to get to DLNA; select check box to “Enable the DLNA Server”; go to Servers in Naim app and at top level you should see your local Plex server in your Mac mini. Drill down and away you go… Good luck
EDIT 2: BTW, if you add your content to a USB and enable Server on your NDX2, it will “serve itself” as well as other devices on your network. It’s got metadata, so it’s a much nicer user experience than the file folder view you’ll get by just choosing the USB directly
This is basic functionality for any UPnP server. Plex is more of a general purpose media server - you may find that a dedicated music server such as Asset works better.
If you want music to play in sync on your two streamers you will need to use multiroom in the Naim app. If you don’t need them to play in sync they can both independently access the music server.
(What’s a DAS? It appears to be an acronym with dozens of uses.)
Desktop Attached Storage (vs Network attached, I think)…
Sorry it isn’t just working for you! While you check out Asset or any other UPNP server (there are lots, many free but leaner in features than Asset afaik), you can also try just copying some of your ripped albums into a USB and enable Server mode and give that a whirl to get used to things. Good luck
A proper UPnP server should be able to access a music library stored on a computer’s internal hard drive, an attached USB drive, or any other folder on another device which is connected to your home network.
hello, so I can see it and the tracks. But playback is having issues im currently working on trying to fix. Either it stays at 0:00 or it just plays static. Still looking into it. Seeing others have great success.
Possibly a network issue. Always frustrating when things don’t work as expected.
Maybe stick the music library on a USB drive and connect it directly to the streamer. It’s slightly more primitive that some servers in terms of functionality, but sound quality is still good and at least ot should get you up and running while you troubleshoot your problem. (Maybe not such a good idea if you have a very large music library.)
So I was able to get assets running and it seems to be running fine now. I did a full system restart and it seems “so far” to be working as it should.
