Very happy with my new set. It took a while to find the optimal setting. Woofers inside or out? Out is better here. The Naim is perfect, especially with the Qobus app.
I could never justify the W5 financially, but I have contemplated making my own DIY version, but active - the drivers used are available to the DIY community. The trouble is ‘mission creep’ affects my project plans and I look into reproducing a larger model - it then gets more complicated. Perhaps one day😉
I did not hear very much difference in de W5 options, but there was quite a difference in price… so the basic it is.
The clearness came to me as a complete surprise. So small, so fresh and clean sound.
There’s a USB port on the back as well if you want the drive to be out of the way.
I can’t see any benefit to USB C here - the faster data transfer rate isn’t required for music playback. I find the smaller plugs to be more susceptible to damage, so the sturdier type A seems a good choice to me.
For me it was a purely esthetic issue. I don’t use usb. But my Naim would look even better without it. And actually I think in a next version the usb will disappear from the front. Esthetics count.
This looks very nice! Did you do an upgrade from the standard W5?
And you position the woofer to the center.
Is that best for you? Wilbert installed them at my place also this way. And somehow it was disappointing. They sounded better in the shop.
With online information I tried a new setup, with the woofers turned outside. So much better! As if Heaven opened up .
I got the SE+. Could hear enough of a difference to merit the upgrade for me.
Yeah, pointing towards the middle was also the recommended setup for installations where the speakers are not too close together. I did try pointing out in my old place and preferred inwards. But that is the beauty of these speakers as well, they are so easy to reposition!
The W5 can be used in much larger rooms than what we have, and at Wilbert they stand nicely away from the walls to allow the rear firing tweeters to properly shine. I also had to mess around with location but eventually you get the sweet spot in the room. Not sure if I am totally happy in the new location yet but it is getting close.
What speaker cable did you end up with? Here I got the MIT Evo 3. Suited my tastes the best of the options I tried.
