New Mac Laptop - MacBook Pro or Mac Book Air

Congrats!

The first thing I do immediately when I get a MBA or a Macbook Pro is to get a case & cover simply for 2 reasons - (1) I find the macbook metal case is very soft and it can be dented or scratched very easily, (2) the Apple Silicon M1/2/3 never runs hot (unlike the Intel version), so it makes sense to protect your investment by protecting it from fall or accidental damages from mishandling it, without worrying about overheating it.

My favorite case is Tech21, designed and made in the UK.

Thank you, I’ll look at cases although I’ve never had one on any of my previous Macs, certainly not on the last one it would have melted it.

Aluminum is rather soft, yes. With the positive aspect, that it will dent instead of break (compared to glass or some plastics).

Wear will obviously depend on (mobile) usage. And how important small dents are for the user.

I have owned 2 aluminium Macs before the new MBA, the last for 10 years, all have endured a few bumps, scrapes and scratches from general use. I don’t baby stuff but equally don’t abuse it either.

The laptops go in camera bags, suitcases, back seat of car etc etc, and used indoors and outdoors.

So I’m hoping that the MBA is as robust as the MBP and G4 Power Book were. I’ll let you know in a few years.

I brought a hard plastic case for my M2 Air in 2022, cost then about £14, no problems what’s so ever, from being on planes, trains, HGV’s backpacks etc.
