New Naim App feature request

Hi,

App updates / firmware updates / router configs / NW protocols these are a pain, but unfortunately part of modern life.

Restarting bits of kit usually helps - however, on a Muso2 you need to unplug the thing as the ability to ‘reset’ it from the device with a SW boot is no longer available.

What I am talking about is the addition of a ‘Restart Muso’ button in the app - granted, this would be a soft boot, rather that the mains plug cold boot, but I still think this could solve all manner of connection issues when they arise (and they will) in future.

It would save someone having to pull a wall plug each time and would offer (perhaps) a more graceful shutdown and restart. I’ve lost one previous Muso2 to SW corruption after numerous cold boots caused by a power cut - it still makes me feel uncomfortable yanking the mains plug when there is no other option; it is after all a computer and I wouldn’t do that to my computer IF I had another option!

People, what say you?

DBS.

Not only have I never seen a reported failure with Wiim firmware installs (of which there are frequent updates) but Wiims also have a soft reboot feature. In fact, the Wiim app makes the Naim one look primitive

Time to dig out your quick start guide. What do you think the reset button next to the USB port might be for? Yes you may loose presets, but what otherwise are you seeking to achieve?

Worthwhile to amend your thread title, nowt to do with a new feature!
No other Naim streamer has this facility.

Hi Castalla,

To be fair to Naim, in the instance where my Muso2 died it was a pretty brutal utilities outage with the power coming back online and then off again for most of the day without notice - had I have know this was going be the case I would have unplugged my Muso (as I did with all of my computers) from the mains the moment we got the first outage.

I know about the reset button. It’s a RESET button. I don’t want to do this - I am looking for an alternative to reaching around the back and pulling the plug each time. I don’t want to lose my config.

As no other Naim streamer has this facility then it may be a good idea to add a ‘restart streamer’ option in the app.

However, just a cursory scan of the forum since the recent firmware update for legacy devices suggests that Naim’s firmware update process is ‘flaky’ to say the least.
My particular beef with the app is that it spontaneously & randomly reactivates the Spotify service :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Perhaps, but having had a Muso2 for quite a while, I have never had the need to do a restart. Maybe worthwhile you explain why you think it is necessary and Naim likely consider a simple switch off and on again, to be the same thing. Naim’s aim of course, is best sound quality over absolute functionality, additional routines may compromise that!

I own a ND5XS2 and I would also very much like an option to restart my streamer. It’s a pain in the you know what to pull the plug if you want/need to do that.

You are fortunate. For a period I was having to restart mine every few weeks - the app would refuse to connect. My mains plug is not easily accessible and it is difficult to unplug and then replug at the Muso end, given the location of the sockets and the weight of the kit. Recently it is happening less - don’t know why, although my network is unchanged.

MuSo 2 wifi vs Router is a lottery. I hear the pain and I agree a “restart” (not reset) option in the app would be appreciated. I had reasonably stable system until I changed the Router and since then I’m constantly tweaking all settings to try to get stable connection. The fun part is that it should have to rely on DHCP protocol and IP network address lease as the power off/on always restores all in order. I validated a static IP option as well and niet, still same idiosyncrasies every now and then. No need to say that MuSo 2 is the single device that is having such disconnection pattern among the 20+ other devices (TVs, Phones, PCs, Smart speakers, Home automation, …) that are just going fine and solid. Boh.

I think you’re seeing a distorted sample. In the main only peeps who have a problem will post. I mostly prefer to use Roon in order to centralise my own library and Qobuz, so I tend to only use the Naim app for radio and TV control. Only very rarely causes me a problem.

And as is well documented ethernet connections make for a much better solution, on many counts, both for the Muso 2 and ND5 XS2.

Ethernet is a better solution because WiFi is often mis-implemented.
We run offices with thousands of devices flawlessly connected at work fully on WiFi (LAN removed completely) and no regrets.
Consumer appliances are the weak link in most of instances.

The main difference between work and home NWs is consistency and qualified onsite support using commercial-grade equipment, compared to the complete opposite (in the majority of cases) in the case of the home NW.

I don’t think that’s really a valid comparison, but I do get the point you’re making; I’ve been in IT for 35 years.

Still in IT after 25+ years myself

The Wiim home app is to say it nicely terrible if you are unlucky enough to have to use a screen reader. Trying out Wiim and Eversolo tonight for a friend and just finding out how luckly I have been as a name streaming user needing a screen reader and being able to use the servers/streamers over the last 15 years.

I wonder how many times over a year I would need this control. Not many. This is very low on my nice to have list having l lived with naim streamers for about 10 u years. I do not find streamers to get unstable over time like some computers.
