New Naim Internet Radio - Feedback & Requests - Part 13

A repeat of the opening post from Part 1:

At Naim, we understand that while many people use our products to get the best listening experience from their own music collection; sometimes you simply want to put the radio on and let someone else choose. We’ve offered a comprehensive internet radio solution for some time, and we are now delighted to announce the launch of our own in-house internet radio solution.

In a collaboration between XPeri and our team here at Naim, we have brought the internet radio server in-house to be maintained internally, as opposed to relying on a third party as with the previous server. This will improve reliability and has opened up a host of improvements to the service, detailed below:

- A selection of over 45,000 stations worldwide
- Advanced metadata feeds for artist, track and album info on many stations
- Focus on high-quality audio streams
- Improved station categorisation
- High-resolution station artwork
- Automated station scanning
- Station podcasts (where available)

The Focal & Naim app will identify any favourites and presets that should be resaved to use the new server.

These updates are not only improving the internet radio server but improving our streaming capabilities too. TIDAL’s new 24-bit, 192 kHz streaming tier, TIDAL Max, is now available through both the Focal & Naim app and TIDAL Connect.

In a significant update for our Chinese customers, Q-Play is now supported in Naim products. QQ Music is one of the largest music streaming services in China, and users are now able to select their Naim streamer from within the QQ Music app for a seamless listening experience.

Regards,
Naim Audio – Software team

With the launch of Naim’s new Internet Radio service (see above), I’ve created this dedicated thread where information can be posted relating to the service and members can post feedback and requests for the team at HQ.

Examples of how this thread can be used;

  • Announcements on key new stations / station rebrands etc. For example recently a big change in UK for Bauer Media and Global. Scala radio rebrands to Magic Classical and about 16 other new or existing stations changing.

  • request stations that we don’t have.

  • issues with a station. Eg, wrong meta / won’t play and so on.

  • notifications of any downtime on either our system in a given region, or a dependent system like the xperi live radio meta.

  • Search issues. We have the station but its hard to find as needs more tags.

  • feature requests / feedback / general radio gossip

Please ensure posts here are ONLY feedback re. the new Naim radio service or station requests. Thanks.

What am I doing wrong. I go to radio, genre, jazz and two channels show up? Under all Genre pages I only have a couple of alternatives. It’s like it’s only listing channels from Sweden and not globally? Is there an option on this somewhere?

Hi @Blackbird

The system is country centric and by default shows stations that are in the listeners country. This is resolved by doing public ip to country lookup.

in your case you’re in Sweden and there are very few Jazz stations. Browse to a different country via the international menu and the genre view for that country will show applicable stations.

Why do it like that? Music labels like Sony/Warner sued Tunein (and won) as Tunein were encouraging their users to play music from stations that were not licensed outside of the intended country they were licensed for. Then they were injecting adverts into the streams as well so they were profiteering on it.

Our policy is:

  • The starting point for browsing is the country that everything is intended for. Eg. If in Sweden then you get stations intended for Sweden
  • We provide ability to go to a different country but its an intentional action by the user. The action is most likely innocent as many stations are licensed for worldwide, or geoblock server side if not.
  • We don’t inject adverts. If you hear adverts the station put them there.
  • We aim to not have pirate/fake stations and will remove when notified that a mistake has been made. A few customers on this forum have requested stations that we couldn’t add due to this. Sorry!

For example, browse genre→jazz in uk and it gives:

Hi all,

We’re seeing issues of the Linn radio streams as they have not been playing reliably since 6th November. From experimentation it indicates some incorrectly configured security layer server side has been added which is blocking more than allowing users to play.

Overall, we’re using the correct URL’s, but until Linn fix their side problematic playback will continue.

Naim Radio is a superior alternative though and in lossless rather than mp3  Just saying…

Linn Radio is back online - but needs a change to the URLs.

Remove the “radio.” from the front and use http not https

Hi @PaulWebster

Can you give an example. I’ve tried various possibilities of this and they don’t resolve, the Linn website is still broken for radio.

Steve

Hi,

re: Linn

With more experimentation have resolved thd url. Now sync’d to production radio servers

Classical on 8004 and “Radio” on 8003

Hi, I have some issues with Radio France / FIP in the UK as after a few minutes the radio is disconnected. If I listen to BBC the radio works perfectly. Any advice? Thanks.

Dear Naim Team,

could you please check server link for Radio Yacht. Since Version 8.0 it is not longer available. Was a 320 kbit stream previously.

Many thanks & Regards

Tom

There’s a Radio Yacht 256kb station listed, although I find that it drops out very regularly. I have a slow internet connection, but Radio Paradise FLAC plays reliably so I suspect an issue at their end.

Is it a saved station that doesn’t work at all? If so try deleting it and searching again.

Hi @TomBa

Here are all the Radio Yacht’s that we have. The iOS/Android app doesn’t actually hold the list of stations, it just shows it from our radio directory servers. So, changing app version doesn’t change radio content offered.

If there is a station missing, if you can point us towards a website that is hosting it and we’ll review and add accordingly.

Hi @juanis78

Have left it running for about 30mins (from Camberley, UK) and it seems to be stable. Can you re-check as the problem may of been resolved on Radio Frances side.

The FIP UK feeds do have a bit of a history of random problems. They seem to be dedicated instances for UK rather than use the France ones and when they go bad, they go really bad.

and on radio Yacht (Italy) they changed their stream about 1 week ago from 320kbit to 256kbit:

The system scans and auto detects these changes and updates the directory accordingly. History of what has gone on shown in the screenshot.

Hi @Stevesky this is the station I referred to above that drops out constantly. I’m in the UK with a slow connection but no issues with other iRadio stations.

Thanks for your fast reply: I noticed a change to 256 kbit, this is displayed on my Muso2 , while my Muso1 and QB1 still show 320 kbit. Problem since Friday is that it start with the same song over and over breaking up after 15-20 seconds to restart again. Tried to add station manually based on radio browser url but it fails. when I stream from their iphone app all is fine.

Regards

Tom

Radio Yacht is in line 1

Hi @TomBa

RE: Radio Yacht, Italy

Have looked into this in more detail and see what the problem is:

  1. The broadcaster has changed the broadcast server that they use.
  2. They’ve left their old server operating but its just repeating around 20seconds of old audio. This confuses the dead station scanners as it appears its working when its not.

I’ve manually updated the system and it should be operational again.

Im in London and France Inter radio cut offs only after 5 or 10 minutes. I usually listen to BBCR6 with higher bitrate and works well. Any idea what could be the issue?
