New phono stage

Currently have an ifi phono stage partnering a Pro-Ject Debut Pro Pick-it (running through a Uniti Star and Focal Aria 923’s).

Considering upgrading the phono stage and considering the Pro-Ject Tube Box DS3. Does anyone have any experience of this or other phono amps in that price bracket (£800) that I should look at auditioning?

I have the NJC phono stage. I have no plans to even listen to any thing else.

For your budget a Grahem Slee unit is worth looking at, such as a Reflex or Accension models. They operate a loan scheme so you can try at home. They are excellent for the price.

There is also Rothwell as an alternative the Rialto is excellent.

I’d be looking for something that does MC and MM.

Dynavector P75 Mk4 would be well worth a listen.

Another shout for the Dynavector P75. Don’t be put off by its small size!

Though you will not go wrong with any of the recommendations being offered.

New Gold Note PH-5.2 or, a bit cheaper but more flexible for MM, the Moon LP 110 v2…

Although i don’t own one anymore, the Dynavector P75 punches well above it’s price point. If you also happen to have a Dynavector MC cart, the PE mode raises the game to an even higher level.

If for mm or high output mc,then the Puresound p10 is lovely.

I’d have suggested the very dame two brands you mentioned: Graham Slee and Rothwell.

Been using the Graham slee accession MC since 4 years now with different carts (Audiotechnica at33sa, Dynavector XX2 and the venerabile Denon dl103) and never looked back, but if I’ll ever be able to afford a rothwell signature 1 I will surely get it as a partner for the Graham slee

I would consider a Rega Aria, recently discontinued, but you should be able to pick one up for around £800 or less. It was the best phono stage for around £1000 or so, until discontinued.

Agreed :+1:

We paid under £400 for a Dynavector P75 mk4 on eBy a few years ago. I would discourage buying new because you get a lot more fo ryour money secondhand and these things take an age to get tired. If you do want new, the Graham Slee options at least let you hear and return if you don’t like them. Above the DV, the Rega Aria is the obvious choice and a s/h bargain.

We preferred the Superline to any of these, but these are no longer serviceable and I think you would need a Hicap to power it, at which point it is starting to get expensive, and the Aria is mor flexible anyway.

There is a 2nd hand Tom Evans ‘The Groove” on eBay at present that is under £800. There is a Michell ISO listed

If not a micro Groove listed here (the Thrchord would very good too)

All should give much more “bang for the buck” than new, especially the Tom Evans Groove unit.

If I wasn’t sorted with a Bakoon EQA-11Reference I would be having that.

Also a Rega Aria MK3 available on the “Preowned” section of my local HiFi Store, Cloney Audio.

And a Audio Analogue AAPhono & a Tom Evans Microgroove + MK2.5, both ex-demo.

Ideally get a home demo to ensure compatibility with your amplifier

I would be very curious about the Whest Pro. And even more curious about that Whest 30 shown above.
