Yes, those hats are distracting ![]()
I know arguable, but she did sing with Django Reinhardt at one time.
I knew a voice trainer who argued strongly that Sinatra, Dean Martin etc were not singers or jazz artists but club crooners.
So possibly down to taste?
I remember only one track by her: “ Paris, Paris, lalala la……”.
So you shall be right ![]()
I really don’t mind, it’s not a competition.
Some voices I’d like mention besides Diana Krall: Jazzmeia Horn and Andrea Motis.
Hope you enjoy them!
Is anyone familiar with Laufey?
She’s an Icelandic/Chinese singer/songwriter (with a Grammy to her name) whom I recently discovered on my indy rock channel through an incredibly infectious song called Tough Luck. She sings in a light jazz-like style and claims the Great American Songbook as her most significant influence. I’ve been meaning to stream her work but haven’t gotten around to it.
Love her vocals. I have her concert double album and am looking to add more to my collection when funds allow. So many talented Jazz singers out there. We are very privileged.
Warm regards,
Mitch in Regional Oz.
Looked up Emmaline. She comes from a Jazz family. Her father is an award winning producer and jazz pianist. She has a degree in jazz, writes her own jazz music and plays violin. So it would seem she has very good Jazz credentials.
She has caught my heart as well as Laufey. Another beautiful Jazz singer, more CDs and vinyl when funds allow. I have shelves of CDs dedicated to soft rock and classical now I am burning holes in my pockets for female jazz. I will have to even the score with some male varieties.
I may have to sell my telescope as I am spending more time listening than I do at the eyepiece.
Warm regards,
Mitch in regional Oz.
Nina Simone! ![]()

There’s an excellent documentary about her on Netflix iirc.
And numerous videos of wonderful concert footage on YouTube.
@frenchrooster I agree with you about Carmen Lundy. There is a JVC XRCD of her. Phenomenal.
@frenchrooster All of the JVC XRCD Jazz issues are really good.

She deserves to be known better.
There are many great singers.
How about Cassandra Wilson. She has been quiet for the past few years, but she has a great voice and has made some good albums. Silver Pony is a good place to start.
First album for me, just arrived last week. Already had 5 plays. Fantastic imo.
I like her voice a lot. The mastering on this album is great too.
I have several of her albums including that one on Analogue Production SACDs. The sound is excellent.
Betty Carter
Ella of course
Helen Merrill
Cassandra Wilson
Nina Simone
Early Billie
I wish you didn’t advise me of SACDs of her, that might cost me! ![]()
Seriously though, the CD I have has fantastic dynamic range and crystal clear sound.
