New Uniti Star and new Bravia 7 TV issue

Hi guys, as in the title, both items brand new. TV output set to pcm and sound is excellent, just one issue. Every 1-5 minutes, the volume output level pops up on screen, something is triggering it. We’re no where near the remote and it’s really distracting during a film. There’s no way to disable osd for volume on the Sony and can’t see anything in the Star menu. Any ideas? I’d prefer not to go to optical as it means using 2 remotes

Welcome to the club, @IamSimonTodd … My guess is that the Naim ARC/CEC implementation relies on some sort of regular “heartbeat” (every 60 seconds exactly), which is interpreted by the latest Sony smart TV firmware as a volume change, and triggers the popup (which Sony introduced 2 firmware releases ago).

Naim support concluded that I should take my Naim unit (Muso 2) to one of their reseller to check if it was ok (but this would only show the behaviour if using a Sony TV with the latest firmware, etc. in my opinion), and Sony support ended up saying “we dont know but there is a firmware coming later” (which did not change anything, of course)…

My (very very faint by now) hope is that either Sony introduces an option to switch the popup behaviour off (it apparently exist/existed on certain models) or that the Naim software team looks into it eventually…

I have already tagged @Stevesky accordingly, but I am sure there are more urgent/important things on his plate (the latest updates to the iOS app, for instance, which is a natural addition to the new Naim radio service, etc. all of which is definitely reaching a greater audience and adding more value, I happily acknowledge)…

who knows…

HDMI ARC always seems to be hit and miss. I used it for a while, but no longer bother with it. I just use Bluetooth which sounds decent enough and still allows use of the TV remote for volume. That’s with a Samsung TV, not necessarily the same implementation as other brands of course.

Is that with a Muso 2 as well?

I haven’t tried linking a Muso to the TV, but it has Bluetooth so I can’t see why it wouldn’t work the same. An optical connection is another option if HDMI is unreliable.

HDMI is actually quite solid - not complaining there - but comes with a very annoying “feature”!… :upside_down_face:

Optical works fine too, of course (and does not have the popup issue, which is HDMI specific), but it means 2 remotes are required: the TV (or apple TV in my case) for content, and the flimsy Muso remote (or my phone with the naim app) for sound volume…

I’ll try Bluetooth, but so far I was under the impression that although it works ok (including controlling volume from a single remote if I recall correctly), this was not a permanent connection… i.e. I would need to reconfigure each time, which would be even worse!

I guess different TVs will vary. My Samsung will not automatically reconnect to Bluetooth on my Atom when turned on, but a little box pops up on the screen asking if you want to use it.

Once connected, the TV remote shows that the volume control is on the Atom, but it doesn’t actually change the Atom volume level, it seems to continue to adjust the TV volume control, but it does mean that only the TV remote is required.

I’ll give it a try! Thanks, Chris.
