Not off to the best start

I had to look that up… Well - apologies - not a small amp at all. More of an almost PA amp…!! Guess it was just too much… Did it go to 12…

The wee beastie is the five channel version…it was the heart of our av system for many years. Built like a tank and designed to work day in day out without a problem, hence why Bryston offer a twenty year warranty but perhaps not as music based as the 4bsst2 but still very effective at what it does …biggest problem is they are not cheap, I think the last price for this model before it was replaced by the cube was around the £10k mark…so not really a fair comparison with the 200dr.

It is booked into PMC for a performance check and I would like to try it with the 202 but may end up selling it to fund a 250/300dr…we will see, early days yet…no rush ,front end needs a little bit of work as well :grinning:.

Not sure I follow your comment? :slightly_smiling_face:

Not with you…?

If you buy atc secondhand you get the benefit of any remaining guarantee

It’s a reference to this section of the film Spinal Tap where the guitarist thinks his amp is louder because the dials go to 11 rather than 10.

Got it… :joy:

Just an update for anybody following my progress, crossovers arrived back this morning from PMC,I was delighted until I open the packaging, to

find that nearly all the larger coils were broken away from the main board!

It appears the box has been dropped with some force and I would guess the weight of the coils has caused them to break free…not what I was expecting to find…as you can guess the air was blue!..after calming down I had a closer look, I can fix this, new cable ties and I have a hot glue gun…nothing else looks damaged…boards themselves look fine.

So a quick email to PMC to put them in the picture and the end result is they were happy for me to rectify the damage but if it turns out that there are further issues, they will sort it out at their end.

So these are the finished articles, ready to go back in their boxes…hopefully during the next few days.

Hopefully the next update will be confirmation that my system is back up and running…couriers! dont you just love them :disappointed:

Jesus. These are quite some plastic clamps, what kind of drop would break them?!

That is the thing I’m a little worried about, it could be age related …perhaps the glue used to secure the coils to the main board has dried out over time…maybe the cable ties have gone brittle with age…unlikely to happen with the crossovers fitted in the speakers…unless you like to throw your speakers around the room…perhaps the closest thing to smashing up your drum kit…but what ever caused it I really hope there is no further damage…PMC have been excellent but it still takes time to get this type of work carried out and I need my music back in my life

Brittle ties seem most likely, true. Still scary. But if the wires are fine it should be ok I guess. Good luck!

:flushed: amazing ‘episode’ in your journey. Good luck!

Not come across brittle ties - and I have some that are about 30 years old that are still like new. And why the glue should come unstuck I don’t know. Maybe the package was involved in an airplane crash or something…

Agree, but it seems like the most likely thing short of someone going in with a wire cutter. It could possibly depend on the type of plastic used, some do become brittle. (Though Spendor PMC should use better ones, then)

If I’m honest it is bothering me some what, brittle ties/dried out glue or not the package must of been pretty poorly treated to end up causing the damage that it has. These boards had multiple layers of bubble wrap around them, so should of been well protected.
Really hope that when then are installed back in their cabinets I don’t have any further problems…fingers crossed things will be fine…I hope!

Maybe PMC need to change their cable tie supplier

Perhaps it went to close to a black hole en route?

Final update of the crossover saga. Repaired crossovers have been put back into their boxes, ran the system all Saturday afternoon and thankfully everything seems to be working fine, the original tweeter is still in place and as PMC mentioned it appears to be undamaged, well to my ears anyway.

Been quiet an eventful journey one way or the other, I just need to get back in touch with PMC to thank them for their support and hopefully they will accept the new pair of tweeters I originally purchased for a refund.

Many thanks for any advice/help given by the forum members," a trouble shared is a trouble halved "…can work on the next step…as streamers are on very short supply at the moment I would like to try a Hicapdr with my 202,I believe this would also give me the option to run the Bryston power amp with the 202…just something I want to try before making a firm decision on which setup to use…again many thanks to everyone. :grinning:
