I’ve not seen Serenity, but reading about it suggests films which feature a world within a game or simulation. Ghost in the Shell (1995) Setting is based on Hong Kong as a futuristic city.
Perhaps The Matrix or Tarkovsky’s Solaris and Stalker?
Yes, it’s all a game simulation. I lived in Mauritius and was surprised to see the scenery feature in the film. I also lived in HK so I’ll check that film out ![]()
Some of Clockwork Orange was filmed in Friars Square, Aylesbury.

Recent film Fountain of Youth on Apple was based in London but filmed in Liverpool. Awful if you happen to live in either city.
Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. According to Wikipedia, it was filmed in Cambridgeshire, the Norfolk Broads, in eastern London at Millennium Mills and Beckton Gas Works in Newham and on the Isle of Dogs. Amazing what a bunch of palm trees can do…
City scenes for Superman 4 were shot in Milton Keynes, I think for cost reasons and Central MK had been modelled with a US influence.
The props people had dressed some of the windows to give relevant US signage etc. It was still in evidence for a few years later but was eventually tidied up.
most ‘exotic’ locations are created with CGI / Studio these days, more economical than transport & board for an entire crew. With todays technology there’s not much that can’t be done
Tax break reasons I think

Among many films shot in Iceland because of its largely out of this world scenery, was part of James Bond Die another day. It was filmed in Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, but they had to dam the lagoon to get it to freeze over to their requirements.
As for otherworldly, part of Iceland was used by NASA for testing moon and Mars rover vehivles - and here’s an infrared pic from one such area four weeks ago:
World War Z with Brad Pitt.
The rainy scene at the military compound was filmed at the water treatment works in Chelmsford Essex. A few other scenes filmed in Boreham Essex.
Amazing out of this world scenery. I recall an Icelandic crime-noir series (forgot the name) where the detective stops for out-of-this-world fast-food & walks away with a polystyrene tray of sheep’s head.
For such a liberal & democratic country, it’s strange that women still take their father"s name (eg. Jonsdottir). Tradition, eh?
Everyone takes their father’s name, in your example second name would be Jonsson for a boy. But first names have to be from authorised list, and they have a complete database of Icelandic people, traceable back to the original Vikings settlers! They have an app, and as all Icelandic people are related (and can trace their ancestry right back to those original settlers), before dating anyone seriously they have to check that they are sufficiently far removed, for marriage or having children IIRC recommended is 4 generations separation, that isn’t statutory (I don’t know what if anything is required in law).
Genealogically speaking, it would’ve made more sense to have had a matronymic system - but there you go. What’s in a name, anyway (apart from in Gilead)
