The Solstice is physically connected to Analog Input 6 on the back of the NAC 332 using the dedicated 8-pin DIN cable. Sound and music playback work perfectly.
System Automation is enabled and configured via ZigBee (Wireless). The NSS 333 is set to Preamp Input 1 (Stream). System Automation works for volume and switching inputs, but when I select the turntable source, the NSS 333 display does not show the turntable logo.
In the Focal & Naim App under “Input Settings”, the factory-preset “Phono” input seems hardwired to Input 2, which cannot be physically used with the Solstice 8-pin DIN cable. I tried mapping the front panel “Phono” button to Input 6 via the volume-control setup mode, but the logo on the NSS 333 screen still remains missing.
How can I force the NSS 333 to display the turntable logo when the Solstice is active? Is there a specific handshake or mapping trick in the app/firmware I am missing?
@Dany I don’t think the NSS 333 has a phono logo like NCS 222. I had a chat with Jason from naim at the acoustica show last year and suggested it would nice touch if it did..
My phono stage is plugged into input 8 and which was mapped to the phono button on the front when I got the amp. The logo is a rectangle and a wavy line. You can change the text under the logo through the app, so I renamed it to phono.
I’m not sure that I understand the issue here, whether the TT cannot be selected via the system automation in the app, or if it can that it’s simply that a phono logo doesn’t appear on the 333. If it’s the latter I struggle to understand why it matters. One can see the platter spinning and hear the music playing so having the fact that the TT is selected displayed on the 333 seems superfluous. I’d imagine the 333 would be in standby anyway. I’ve never used the New Classics so cannot help further.
I don’t suppose it really does. It’s just that if it’s supposed to be displayed and it isn’t then it’s slightly niggling, especially with equipment at this price. If it were mine it would bug me. When these things don’t do what they are supposed to do it makes me feel unsettled. Maybe I should get out more…
@HungryHalibut I agree with you. I have an ICON in the app and for me that is all that matters. Sometimes we chase after perfection or have in our mind, how stuff “should” work. At the expense of serenity. I am guilty as well. I have the NC stuff.
With a 222 a TT is connected to it. With a 333, a TT is connected to a 332. So really I’m not sure why a 333 might be expected to show that something is playing that’s not actually connected to it. If the 332 is mapped correctly then I imagine the phono button will be illuminated, giving the visual confirmation that is desired.
I assume it’s a distinction between the dedicated MM phono input on the 222, and the DIN input on the 333 which, while it can be used to power a Naim phono stage, can be used for any source you want.
Ah, yes I see your point. The TT is not directly connected to the 333. I’ve no idea if the 333 can be configured to display a TT logo when the 332 is set to phono. As you point out, it seems a little odd that it should be expected to show a source being selected that’s not actually connected to it. But then I know absolutely nothing about these products and their capabilities and I’ll never need to.
Probably I should just have kept my mouth shut! Your comment put me in mind of when I had a Melco and there were a number of things that should have been a certain way but just weren’t. It didn’t matter in the sense that it didn’t impact on my being able to use it and enjoy music but these things were still a constant niggle at the back of my mind. I don’t like loose ends. I spoke to an old friend who is a bit of a computer expert and he pronounced that “with things like this it’s very rare that they will always do 100% what they are supposed to do in all circumstances”. It’s one of the reasons I moved back to CD. Without any doubt at all the Melco was the most complex and user unfriendly bit of kit I’ve ever had. I was relieved to see the back of it, even if it was £5K down the drain.
I guess the 333 is the same as the NDX2. Our “TV” and “Vinyl” inputs (one physical, one virtual for system automation only) show the generic logo.
Can’t say this has ever bothered us, I mean you see it for a few seconds before screen goes off anyway.
Re-reading the OP message I assume that the mapping to the physical phono button on the 332 and the input the Solstice is using is working. So the issue appears to be that the phono graphic doesn’t come up on the 333 when it is selected and @IainO you say a generic graphic comes up. As you say it’s not a big deal, but I do think it would be a nice touch if the phono graphic did display. There does seem some confusion on the thread as to what is going on here… This is how mine works. My 333/332/250 is set up with system automation. Either all units are on or all units are off. On/off can be triggered by the remote, the 333 power button or the 332 power button and all of units will be powered up or down in the correct sequence. So the 333 is powered up when ever the 332 is powered up. If a new input is selected on the 332 then the new input is displayed on the 333 screen for a couple of seconds. I imagine this is the same on the 222 on its own screen. As I understand it, the issue is not to do with the OPs 333/332 configuration, but that the 333 doesn’t have the phono graphic.
Because the NC is all connected for system integration, so you kind of expect it. You would think it could done and it would be a nice touch. But agreed it isn’t exactly the end of the world.
The whole point of system automation is that it allows the streamer, via its app and remote, to control the preamp, including input selection, to avoid the need for the additional remote control.
Thanks, Bokermonz, I’m not sure if I might have seen a record player logo after all. But you’re probably right, and there’s only the standard logo.
@Dany It is a standard icon. @Bokermonz showed it. I don’t know what the issues really are. I use thr app and can easily choose phono. The app has the noted icon. Just use the app.
