OMG Audio Neurosis - NDX2/Standby

It must be my imagination but I think it sounds better about 30 minutes after start up from Standby. I really must be imagining it, will never think about it again!

Standby is essentialy the same as off, so a bit of warm-up time is perhaps not surprising.

As you say Chris, It is like that on an internally powered NDX2.

It looks like Lindsay is using a 555PS to power the NDX2 so it won’t going into true standby when powered this way.

Ah yes, I missed that, NDX2/555 would indeed behave differently.

I don’t think so
Martin

When used without a separate power supply the unit is completely powered down except for the network and zigbee comms if in network standby mode. The main internal power supply is off, along with the entire streaming board and DAC.
As James pointed out, the old separate power supplies don’t have a standby mode so will remain powered up, as they pre-date the network standby regulations to which new products have to conform.

Thanks guys.

Weird walking into the lounge and seeing just one component without the green light on!

Yes, I don’t like that, either.
I thought there would be configurable options in the settings, in the app, to turn auto standby off?

There are, but why would you consume more power than you need to?

As HH says in the menu you can set for how long before auto standby kicks in or not at all.

You are right IMV.

My Naim kit, both OC and NC always seems to sound better after a warm up.

Probably no coincidence that my Vertere PSU is designed to be left switched on.

Although units may be in standby or fully on, I sure there must be additional circuit warming/settling going on when actually playing music.

Right that’s it, no standby, true Naim here😉

You may already have come across this, but if you want to use standby mode without powering down the main transformer so that everything is kept warm, the workaround is to either turn on server mode, or insert a USB stick into one of the ports.
This gets around the regulation that requires very low power consumption in standby mode, as more power is required, so the main power supply remains powered up.

Well last night I cancelled standby (screen off, shame it looks cool) but definitely better on switch on this morning :grinning:

I usually shut my NDX 2 down into sleep mode after every listening session which is permanently powered from an XPS DR. At the beginning of the next session it usually takes around 20/30 minutes of replay to fully get back on song. Very hard to walk away once warm-up has begun and i’ve settled in however…

Yes it’s utterly compelling, I’m finding it more so than my CDS3, and that I find very surprising.

In fact just about every CD I rip I listen to, some late nights!
