BF, thanks for the clarification, although getting a ‘good’ silver cable seems a bit of a lottery.
I only have and eR in conjunction with a Cisco 2960 i.e. no oR. Do you think it is worth it in terms of SQ to have a the SR4T on an eR only, bearing in mind there appears to be much more benefit in putting it on an oR?
Hi Nigel,
our ER is connected to the router via a blue Cisco 2960 8 port gigabit switch too.
There isn’t an option to bypass the Cisco, as this also connects the TV and Oppo disc player to the network and I want to ideally separate these from the hifi.
Do we think the SR4T is worth putting on the ER in this context? For us, yes absolutely it is.
Interesting. I use a Ghent Neotech solid copper for my opticalRendu (powered by the Sonore UltraSupply); I may have to try a silver cable at some point. Not sure, being here in the States, I want to try this PH cable gamble. Anyone else have some recs for other silver DC cables?
Thanks Nigel. A bit rich for my blood, and I only need a 6-9 inches or so. Think maybe I’ll pick up the pieces and warm up the soldering iron. The Ghent Neotech is very fine sounding as it is so it would really just be for curiosity’s sake.
So far I’ve only run the Paul Hynes DR4T in the 12V setting feeding the eR, but now I’m experimenting with the lower voltages and think I’m preferring 7V. I’d be interested to hear about other users experience with the different Voltages.
Alex Crespi and John Swenson have both stated at one time or another that the eR is intended to run on 12v. Yes, it can work on 7v, as many have claimed on the CA site regarding SQ benefits as you’re finding, but it will run even hotter and/or due to it being not as efficient.
Update on my SR4T experience FWIW…
I’ve tried 5 different DC power leads and every voltage output, but for my ears in my system, none match the musicality of the SMPS that the etherRegen came with, so the SR4T is unfortunately on its way back to South Uist (Stephen at Paul Hynes Design has been incredibly helpful and a paragon of customer relationship handling btw).
I’m happy to stop my LPS paranoia and agree with Uptone that there’s no upside in replacing the stock SMPS power supply.
I thought from the get go that the eR sounded stunning, but like many of us obsessives, the thought that things could be better still drove the itch to investigate the many positive experiences reported here.
For me now that itch is scratched and the system just sounds absolutely gripping. Really thrilled with the musical experience I’m getting right now and that cash refund will be going towards a second 555PS for the ND555 instead.
It is funny because I came to the opposite conclusion: I didn’t find a big difference when using the Uptone Audio lps 1.2 vs the stock smps. However I found a big uplift with the MCRU. One of these days I need to try the stock smps back in to see if it is confirmed.
One of the points I am always wondering is that in my experience every change to a system has a settling in time that is usually longer (much longer) than anticipated. So I personally suspect that often when feeling an improvement in SQ with a change it really is related to the change that was made BEFORE the last one…
Interesting stuff, indeed. The timing is good as well. I have a Paul Hynes SR4 with both the copper and silver DC on the way, but unfortunately, it is stuck at the ISC in New York, so God only knows how long it’ll take to reach me (it’s already been seven days and counting).
Unlike the majority here, my experience with the eR has been less than eye-opening. In fact, it hasn’t made much if any difference for me in my system—SMPS or powered from the UltraCap LPS-1.2 that it’s currently paired with.
I purchased the SR4 to try powering my Chord Qutest on the 5v setting, but it occurred to me to try it on the eR at 12v for a few days to see if there’s any difference. I certainly am curious if anyone’s felt a Hynes or Farad or any number of other LPSUs would better benefit the eR or a DAC…theoretically.
I’ll give it a go if it ever gets delivered, but the USPS has been abysmal for quite some time. We’ll see. Anyway, good that you saved yourself some money @KJC.
As Nestor Burma, the biggest uplift was with MCRU and also Farad. It was immediate and clear on the first seconds. Not subtle.
With the lps 1.2, it was more subtle, but real however.
Maybe the results vary because we have all different electric network characteristics?
I think that’s an absolute truth FR. I’ve reported my findings in the spirit of sharing experiences, but would certainly not suggest that it’s a useful pointer to what someone else may find. On top of the usual caveats about system, personal taste etc., I’m finding that what works as the ‘Server’ part of the system is even more situational and arbitrary than the rest of the system. YMMV should be strengthened to ‘your mileage almost certainly will vary’
