I’ve been contractor at Fortis and Dexia and some smaller assignments at other companies. Brussels is certainly a good place if you like good food, beers and wine. Life standard can be high there provided sufficient salary, pension or savings.

In my team of about 200 engineers there are precisely 3 ‘native’ Dutch guys in Amsterdam. My observation is that the folks having kids in education are likely to stay the rest of their lives whilst the ones without kids go back to their patrie ( pardon moi French ). I see folks from certain countries completely living their own life following their own heritage and others adapting to the Dutch or better Western European culture.
No judgement, just observation and I find it fascinating. Enrichment of my own life really.

My life has been much enriched by living and working in Europe. If I had not remarried I doubt that I would have returned to the UK. I am proud to be from the UK, it educated me and provided my security for many years, but I have no emotional connection to my place of birth or the place I grew up in. My extended family have moved across the UK for work or marriage related reasons and no longer live in the area of my childhood home. I also find that the UK has become more inward looking over the years and that disappoints me. The UK remains a good place to live but there are others in Europe thatI find just as attractive.

Thanks Pete. Not quite your level but if the sale of the place we are after completes then we have a small resto project on our hands. A couple of walls down , a new wall up and installation of a full wet , air to water heat pump heating system. Plus a couple of doors moving and the normal bathroom and kitchen replacement. A busy year I think for next year.
