Hi. We are currently on a train from Basel to Paris Gare de Lyon. We arrive about lunchtime and have maximum an hour and a half free for lunch before we need to get to gare du Nord for our onward journey to London. Looking for a quick bistro lunch idea near either station, although I remember the gare du Nord area is probably not particularly promising. Perhaps it’s changed. Any ideas? Bear in mind we have luggage on wheels. Think airline type cabin bags. Thanks for any suggestions!
You do get out and about - good on you.
Good luck with that, but… “quick lunch’. In Paris?
Homesick, were you?
Gare du Nord area is ugly and dirty.
Gare du Lyon better, but neither an interesting area. So no idea.
Google search, le train bleu near Gare de Lyon.
But anyway the OP should be in the train.
Love Le Train Bleu! Seconded by me!
Thanks for your recommendations. In fact they came in after the event. But I can confirm we did in fact take the laziest option and ate at Le Train Bleu and it worked well. Sadly given I had no reservation in the main restaurant we were shunted into the bar area so a reduced menu. But all was good nonetheless. ![]()
It’s strange that you have just returned from Basel. We have just booked to go there in March. Train to Gare du Nord, night in a hotel and then train from Gare de Lyon the next day. Mrs HH has wanted to go to Basel for ages, and we will get to visit the Vitra museum.
We had one night last night in Basel after getting the Gotthard express from Locarno from south to north across Switzerland. We arrived in Basel about 3.30pm yesterday and got a train from the city at 8.30 this morning. Wish we had had more time to explore the city it looks interesting. We had a beautiful stroll along the Rhine yesterday evening in autumnal sunshine. I think I would like to go back so I am sure you will enjoy.
Le Train Bleu is the best choice in my opinion, inside Gare de Lyon. I had many business lunches and dinners there when working for Alstom, we could see our trains below, which made for nice conversations around product, quality and excellence.
Looking at pictures again, i saw the entry with the steps, from the train station directly. I remember now, already went there, but maybe 30 years ago. But for coffee. Memories, memories….when i was waiting the train to ski stations towns.
I recommend the Tinguely Museum too.
Basel is expensive!

That’s why we’ve booked an apartment. It will be home cooking for us.
