Path from Nait to Bi-Wiring

Hi there!

My current system is Nait XS2, Flatcap XS & Tannoy XT6F (with LP12 & CD 5Si as sources).

I’d like to bi-wire the XT6Fs with the hope and expectation that I would maximize the potential of these speakers. I would be interested in opinions on a path to achieve this, in the most cost effective manner.

Thoughts?

Don’t bi-wire a Naim amp.
Naim amps require a high(ish) inductance load on the output stage.
Bi-wiring halves inductance.

Don’t.

Naim’s recommendation is not to biwire. The experience of forum members supports this. At best it won’t improve SQ and may well make it worse. If possible, get suitable lengths of Naim’s NACA5 cable made up with an F-connection at the speaker end and the correct plug at the amp end.

Supernait, or a hicap to replace the flatcap.

Fully agree. For years i had an XS2 being fed from a Flatcap XS. The uplift i gained from trying a HiCap DR was quite extraordinary, so much so that the Flatcap XS was sold on very quickly. That was done using the same speakers (Spendor A9’s). Just swapping out the power supply was an upgrade on the entire system at the time.

Well it was quite different for me. Tried a HC on my Nait XS and, unlike the FlatCap, which subtly improved the sound the HC changed it completely and not in a good way. A dealer posting at the time described the effect as “manic”, a good description of what I heard.

Swap the XS for a SuperNait? Now you’re talking. Or even a Nait 50 perhaps.

Try it and form your own opinion.
IME biwire is a con and often screw the sound.

Some users have the exact opposite experience or opinion.

Hi, I have a Nait 5si driving Tannoy Revolution XT 8F. The Tannoy’s are easy to drive. I guess an XS2 should be capable enough to drive the XT 6F’s. Some time ago, I replaced the standard Bi-Wire jumpers by AudioQuest Thunderbird BiWire Jumpers, which made a small but noticeable difference. You do n’t mention what speaker cables you use, but that can also make a pretty big difference. I use AudioQuest Rocket 33’s and have some NAC A5’s that I still need to test. I experienced some serious differences with my XT 8F’s by just playing with position and toe-in.

Some useful and very interesting feedback - thank you. I’m going to explore some of the suggestions and will share any conclusions that I reach. Again, thank you!

Be careful that you don’t damage anything.

You can always hope, but what gives you expectation? All biwiring does is allow you to use cables with different characteristics so if one cable sounds better for bass and another for treble you could use the best for each, assuming that neither, nor their combination, adversely affects the amp.

If you really want to maximise the speakers’ potential you could perhaps drive them actively: take out the internal crossover (might be behind the terminal panel, otherwise might be possible by removing a driver first), get a programable active crossover, a second power amp, and bi-amp them.
