Popular artists that you own nothing by, and why

99% of the artists who debuted after 1980.

As that is a rather glib answer, let me add that the only albums by Led Zeppelin and The Doors in my collection are two disc compilations of each - but I haven’t played either in more than 30 years. (My Steely Dan comp might get a single play in a year.) I got more than enough on classic rock radio (and I stopped listening to that a while back).

On the other hand I spend plenty of time with Bach, Coltrane, Ella, Sondheim, Bela Fleck, and many others.

The list is endless, I just do not have the time to listen to everything, or wish to buy more music than I already buy (too much). Here are a few notable holes in my collection.

A group that has always grated on my ears is Queen. I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon, and fell asleep in their early days (thank you pre concert beers). I have nothing by this bombastic group, and nor do I want anything by them. A group that made Rock respectable to my mother-in-law. Yuk.

Beatles and Rolling Stones. Just not my generation. Jimmy Hendrix, ditto. I do have an old vinyl of Tommy by the Who though. They have made great music, that does not interest me.

Madonna, Taylor Swift, etc etc. Yawn. Michael Jackson; the Jimmy Saville of Pop.

I loved Yes ( about the only Prog music I can still play and enjoy), but King Crimson and Gentle Giant never tempted me to add any of their mostly kitsch music to my collection.

Bob Marley, and Reggae, a music that does nothing for me.

Oasis and Coldplay. It is a mystery, why these two groups were so popular. I find nothing interesting in their music at all.

Coldplay
The Beatles (love lots of the songs just no albums - or have I?)
Bruce Springsteen

I have a big Jazz collection, but the old masters like Armstrong and Duke Ellington do very little for me.

I came to Jazz via Pat Metheny**, and my tastes follow what is contemporary.

** I was into rock, but I was listening to Phil Collins playing his favourite music. He played Pat Metheny 's San Lorenzo, a moment that changed my musical preferences. I had come across a music far more interesting than the now jaded Rock of the time.
