With all the posts asking about one or two HiCaps vs 1x SuperCap to power the NAC282, it got me wondering if the SuperCap could somehow (with an appropriate cable) use its extra sockets to power the 282 NAPSC socket (thereby obviating the need for a NAPSC)?
I believe the answer is no.
One of the other members who has the technical expertice will come along and provide the technical reasons why shortly… …
I’d say no. The Napsc outputs 18.5v for the Nac202/282 amps etc. The supercap outputs are at 24v.
I think the supercap via the burndy socket has 12v output also.
The other point is that the 282 does not have the means to self-power the digital circuits without the Napsc by means of a jumper plug.
You can use a supercap to power both upgrade sockets but you need to retain the Napsc.
Definitely no.
Ah, OK. Not that I had any intentions in that direction (I have a 252/SC) but just curious as the NAPSC is just another box Naimees have to have on their shelves.
Sure, but of course the true Naim officianado’s goal is to have as many Naim boxes as possible!!
But joking aside, reviewing the setup and seeing what is optimum is good. For example I have been experimenting recently with my Stageline power. I powered it from a Flatcap XS rather than the Nac 202 socket. I then bought a Hicap to power the pre-amp and it turned out that it is better to power the Stageline from the 202 as this is then via the Hicap. It does sound better that way.
The two ‘SNAIC5’ style outputs are clearly marked as 24V DC, but the ‘Digital Output’ is not called out.
I do recall that this output is NOT the same as a NAPSC (so not 18,5V DC).
I think I read (on here…) that its 22V DC…? Not Sure…
I know you cannot use it to substitute for a NAPSC, on a 282 ( or 82). It can only be used with a 252 (or 52). AFAIK…
Hi Ian - It’s a 12v output on the ‘Digital’ output socket on the SC.
OK, thanks. Well I knew it was NOT 18V…!!!
The NAPSC on the 282 even with a SuperCap was one of the reasons we listened to a 252 when upgrading from 272…2 power sockets?!
Several minutes later an easy decision was made.
One ‘advantage’ of running with 2 HiCap’s and a NAPSC, with an 82, would be that moving to a Supercap is one socket less…
Even better, you have 2 Hicaps to trade for a s/h Supercap for stage 1, and then you already have the Supercap to power the 52 that is the probable second stage…
Also one less box….
( well, that’s the excuse I used ………)
My HCs went to my Headline & Stageline.
Signed “Boxes R Us”
We tried Hicap or 52 Aux2 to power a Superline after getting it an Airplug and the Aux 2 won. Your ears may disagree of course, but indirect Supercap. Power beat direct Hicap power for us.
