The good news is that’s not correct. The guideline is 12 to 15 years, and even at that it’s not necessarily required then if it’s performing well.
For a preamp that’s more than 15 years old, that’s just a general rule of thumb in my opinion. If it were me, I’d save the money and simply send it in to be checked over, and leave it at that.
When we had a qualified service agent here in NZ, he mentioned that some capacitors and parts don’t need replacing for up to 30 years so why change those particular components if they test fine? If they’re within spec, they’re fine.
I’ve also got a mate with a grey Burndy 52 that, as far as I know, has never been serviced, and it still sounds fantastic.
As an aside, I have two 2013 (I think !) 555DR power supplies powering my ND555. How do you know they are ready for service ? I can’t say I’ve noticed any decline in performance but I’d imagine it’s a slow, subtle process and with firmware updates, cable changes etc over the years the sound of the system naturally changes anyway.
All second hand Naim boxes that I have purchased have always gone straight for a service to give me the confidence that it is original, in good condition and will sound its best
Slow declines are less noticeable…..I tend to use time (age) as a proxy. I too have 2 x 555ps ans one is definitely in the window of needing a service and it has a sticky on off button to be fixed too.
I’ll probably get one sent of soon as it’s nice to have everything all up and running for the autumn /winter months when I tend to do a lot more listening!
Re the OP I know it’s an expensive outlay after an expensive purchase but for peace of mind I would get them serviced at earliest opportunity - you’ll have a fabulous pre amp amp for the next decade maybe 12 years.
TBH even if Naim do produce a 552 replacement (I don’t think they will like for like and suspect they’ll build a £60k product instead) it’s likely to fall into a cost bracket I would not be prepared to go for…..point is the 552 is plenty good enough to last a lifetime!
Having sent 2 nacs, 282 and 252 to Salisbury for service, id suggest not bothering from a sound perspective.
However power supplies and power amps are a different story, so just send the psu for the 552.
As I have mentioned before, my 252, from 2003 returned from Salisbury with an original wiring fault still not fixed. Yes, it “ passed” some test twice, but is clearly to me and my dealer wrong. The L&R channels are crossed on one of the tape outputs.
So, yes spend the money on a 552 service if you want peace of mind, but dont expect any significant sound betterment unless you already have a known fault.
Being able to afford is one thing but looking my kids in the eye as they will find it hard getting on the house ladder and saying I spent ÂŁ60k on a preamp is another!
The 552 is wonderful to my ears, yes a 500 streaming level pre would be of interest but again I fear that would be a price too far!
If the 552 is in budget go for it and get it serviced when you can. If you have a good relationship with a dealer you could get some counsel on the urgency of the service!
Post service it will send as good as a new one at least half the total price
