So, the 156 has arrived and I’ve got it plugged in quickly to test (I’ll find a better position later with improved cable dressing). SCDR still hums but I have to admit it is far, far quieter. I’m going to leave it on with no music playing whilst I’m on work calls as the humming is normally much louder at different times in the day.
Initial impressions are the system sounds a lot more relaxed than versus my DIY block. I’ve also got another Acrolink/Furutech Rhodium cable on the way for the SCDR. The one in the picture I assembled myself; but David at MCRU is doing the new one for me as he’ll do a much better job! I’ve got purple fuses in everything except the power line. They are a fantastic upgrade by the way.
Worth noting I’m going to move the Fraim further forward later as quite a few cables touching the wall.
Lovely!
Relaxed as in less harsh or does it seem to play slower with less drive?
Less harsh/bright
Humming almost non-existent at the moment, but I am going to wait and monitor throughout the day before releasing the white smoke
Whenever I power my system down, then power up. I can hear the hum from the two NPX 300’s and 350’s. However, next time I play music and listen to hum levels, before playing. The level has almost dropped to a non existent level. So, give it a day or two….and keep the faith.
So I wonder why it still hummed when you had the Puritan 156 last time. Glad it’s an improvement. Did you buy used this time?
So, for clarity it has not stopped humming but it is way quieter than it was. You could hear it outside the room, let alone from the other side of the room. Only noticeable now if you get close up to it. As @NoNaim suggests (still the best profile name there is for me!) hopefully it may continue to improve as the 156 does its thing.
Yep, this one was second hand but only used for 90-100 hours by the previous owner. It is also plugged into a different socket now I have moved my system. Not sure if that would account for an improvement; but the wall it was next to previously has three teenagers on the other side who no doubt have a wealth of devices plugged in that may also have led to interference (I can hear their NAS drive churning late at night it is so loud…).
I cannot remember, when I purchased the Puritan new. How much change there was over the first 100 hours. However, having now owned it for over a year, it still performs as stated above, when fully powered down. I can only hear a very low level of hum, when my ears are close to the Puritan,
Are you (or is anyone) saying that the Puritan was reducing hum more effectively after burning in, or that there was an improvement in perceived sound quality?
I personally, cannot categorically say that there was a improvement in sound quality, as the Puritan burned in.
What I can say categorically, it there was a improvement in sound quality, from the first switch on. The reason being, there was no longer a swarm of bees in the room.
Any 156 users that tried the power amp outside the 156 and the rest in it?
Very quickly.
Power amps hum when not connected to Puritan.
Connected to the Puritan, they do not.
I wonder if I should get one for my fridge? Now that makes some noise…
Much cheaper to get a new fridge!
Hmmmm good point. That wouldn’t be as much fun but probably the best option I agree.
Actually, the cheapest option is a cold slab, in a small room. Usually known a a Pantry.
I have tried the 500PS direct into mains socket. It sounds perhaps more dynamic. But when sysstem isn’t being used 500PS hums. Whole point of Puritan is to stop that. So 500PS on the block.
